Chapter 2: The 'Half-Breed'
Axel ran straight through the courtyard, up to the stake to which the fur was tied to. The sound of his footsteps made the fur's ear twitch, and he opened his eyes to see a small tiger in a straw hat looking up at him. "Hey kid, what are you going in here?! Go play somewhere else, this place isn't safe for you!"
Axel growled a bit, at being called a child for the second time in minutes. "I'm not a kid! I'm a pirate, and I'm looking for good people to join my pirate crew!" Kawaii looked at the small feline, and began to laugh. "Ha! Aren't you a bit too small to be a pirate?" Axel placed his paw on his hat, and gave the man the same determined look that he gave to Coby earlier.
"I don't care if I'm small, being a pirate's my dream! And there's nothing wrong with it!" Axel replied, sticking his tongue out to the fur. Kawaii rolled his eyes at the tiger, and chuckled slightly. "Sure And you think that I'll join your imaginary crew if you untie me?" "It's not imaginary; and I'm not sure if I want to invite you yet. You have a pretty bad reputation you know." Axel replied.
"I don't care about that. The only reason I'm in here is because I saved a little girl's life, and I don't think that's a crime. Besides, I only have to survive here for a month, then I'm free." Kawaii stated, making Axel shrug and walk away, out of the courtyard and back to the street.
Axel hopped back over the wall, landing next to Coby who was waiting nervously. "What happened?! Are you okay??" Coby asked, lifting the small tiger off the ground and looking him over. An annoyed Axel gave the nervous canine a 'whack' to his head, and he was put back on the ground.
"I'm fine, but that guy...he doesn't wanna join me. He's determined to stay here for the next--" Axel's sentence was cut short by a tall, well dressed skinny feline who was walking past the two. "Three days!! I'll publicly execute the prisoner in three days!!"
Axel and Coby ran up to the man, obviously confused at what was going on. "Execute the prisoner? What do you mean? Who are you?" Coby asked. The feline looked at the canine with a condescending sneer, before pushing him out of his path. "Who am I?? Who are you, to be standing in my way! I'll tell my father on you! I'll tell him that you were in the great Helmeppo's way!" the feline shouted.
Axel watched as Coby was shoved to the ground, then looked up to the tall feline. "Execute the prisoner? But he was promised his freedom after a month." Axel said, making Helmeppo laugh condescendingly. "That was just a lie, you stupid brat! Haha, you're just as dumb as that swordsman!"
As the feline laughed, Axel became enraged as he recalled Kawaii's situation, and how determined the Half-Breed was to the false promise he was made. Axel jumped straight into the air, and gave the feline a fierce uppercut kick to his jaw, knocking some of his teeth out. As Helmeppo fell to the ground, Coby was freaking out, and grabbed the tiger before he could land.
"Axel!! What are you doing?!" Coby shouted, as the tiger thrashed about his his paws. "Let go of me Coby!! That guy is trash!! Let me beat him up!!" Axel said, clawing the air in Helmeppo's direction. The two bodyguards helped the feline back to his feet, and he then glared to the small tiger and the canine holding him. "You little bastard...you hit me! I'll make you regret this!! I'm gonna go tell my dad: the fearsome Lieutenant Axe Hand Morgan!!! He'll put you and everyone you care about to death!!!" Helmeppo screamed, as he was escorted away by his bodyguards.
As Helmeppo was leaving, a few bystanders were in complete shock at what they heard, and hurried and fled the area. "Axel, do you realize what you just did?! Now the captain of the marines on this island want us dead!" Coby exclaimed, setting Axel back on the ground. "I don't care if they send people to come kill me, that guy deserved it! Now c'mon, I gotta go talk to Kawaii." Axel replied, running back over to the military courtyard.
"Aren't I GREAT!?" boasted Lieutenant Morgan, as he looked out the window from his office. "Yes sir, you are the greatest, sir!" answered Lieutenant Morgan's attendant. "Then explain to me why the town's tributes are getting smaller and smaller...?!" Morgan asked, growling as he spoke. "Er...the townspeople are currently too poor to raise--" "It's not a question of how much they can pay, it's a question of their respect for me!" Morgan interrupted, glaring at the frightened marine with his sharp feline eyes.
Suddenly, the door to the office slammed open, and a screaming feline ran in, holding a bag of ice on his swollen cheek. "DADDY!!!" Helmeppo screamed. "Huh? What's with all the noise son? Need something?" Morgan replied, as his son looked at him with anger in his eyes. "I need you to kill someone for me."
Out in the courtyard, Axel had returned to the tied up fur, who rolled his eyes at seeing the tiger again. "You again? I told you, I'm not gonna be a pirate!" Kawaii said. "Hey, you. If I loosen your ropes, then you'll join, right?" the tiger asked, making Kawaii sigh in exasperation. "I told you no. I don't want to become some bad guy who hurts people, like a pirate." Kawaii replied.
Axel crossed his arms, and tilted his head to the side in confusion. "What? But people already think your a bad guy. And you were arrested." "You need to pay more attention, child. I already said I was arrested for saving a little girl, and that's not a crime." Kawaii replied, only to be ignored. "I don't care, you're gonna join me! I decided already!"
Kawaii was really starting to get annoyed, but was cut off before he could reply. "Hey, I heard that you're pretty good with a sword. Is that true?" Axel asked, making the man growl lowly. "If I had my weapon, I would show you. But that idiot son took it away from me..."
Axel placed his paw on his hat, tipping it down over his eyes, leaving only his fanged grin showing. "I see...I'll go take your sword back from that bastard...but then to get it back from me, you'll have to join me!" Axel said, giggling while sticking his tongue out at the fur. "What?! Why you little--that's dirty!!" Kawaii shouted, as the tiger raced off toward the marine base.
On the roof of the naval base, there was large commotion, as the marines were completing their Lieutenant’s task: which was to mount a large statue of Morgan on top of the marine base for all to see. “That’s it men! Nice and steady! Don't damage even one inch of it!" Lieutenant Morgan shouted to his twenty men, who were straining to lift the giant statue with just their own strength, puilling it all the way from the ground 6 stories below with just steel cable.
Lieutenant Morgan was a large feline, who was extremely muscular; unlike his son who was very skinny and lanky. Morgan stood a good head and shoulders above all the other marines in the base, who he looked down upon with his brown, slit feline eyes. However, Morgan's most two distinguishable traits was his iron lower jaw which composed the lower half of his head; and his missing right paw, which had been replaced by a giant steel battle axe.
"Daddy!! Why won't you help me get revenge!? That kid hit me in my face! Even you haven't ever hit me before!!" Helmeppo screamed, making his father rise from his chair. "Do you know why I've never hit you before, Helmeppo?" Morgan asked. "Yeah, because I'm your great son!" Helmeppo replied. "No, that's not it, the reason I've never hit you..."
Morgan's sentence was cut off as the lieutenant sprang from his seat, and drove the top of the wooden shaft of his axe into his son's face, sending him crashing into some boxes on the other side of the roof. "...is because you're a worthless son who isn't really worth hitting!" Morgan shouted. As Helmeppo picked himself up from the debris, his nose bleeding and tears pouring from his eyes like a newborn, Morgan came over to him and grabbed him by his shirt collar, looking him directly in the face. "Do not forget, you are not the great one here. Your father is the great one here."
Morgan left his son crying and whimpering in the debris, and went back over to his men. "Hurry it up with that statue! I want that thing on the roof within the hour!!" the lieutenant roared out.
Down at the ground level of the base, Axel was confused by the lack of people, as the place seemed empty. "Hmm...where is everyone? I didn't expect to find that bastard son so soon, but not finding anybody is crazy!" the tiger thought, until he looked up at the base and saw a large object being pulled up by a series of ropes.
"Hmm, what's going on up there? Guess I'll go take a look." Axel thought, as he extended his right arm behind him. Suddenly, a small, green arrow of electricity formed in his right paw. "Here I go! Goro Goro no..." Axel aimed his right paw, and the green arrow shot from his paw and attached to the top of the marine base, leaving behind a 'rope' of electricity leading back to the tiger's paw. "...hook!!" Axel shouted, as he held tight to the lightning 'rope' as it retracted and pulled him up to the top of the building.
Axel shot through the air at stupidly high speeds, which led soaring him over the top of the building, about 20 above the roof. "Uh-oh...I'm going too fast...!" Axel shouted, as he shot another 'arrow' toward the roof, so he wouldn't go crashing back down to the earth stories below him. This time, the lightning arrow attached itself to the back of one of the marines pulling up the statue. The arrow electrocuted the unlucky man, as well as every other marine who was holding the steel cable, as it made a great, yet unfortunate conductor. As the workers fell to the ground unconscious, so to did the statue they were pulling, crashing down to the earth with a large 'BOOM' and shattering into rubble.
As the tiger pulled himself down to the roof, every conscious marine stared at him with an expression of shock and anguish, as all their hard work had been reduced to nothing in an instant. Axel looked at the men, then down to the large rubble pile below. "Er...sorry about that." he said, scratching the back of his head.
"CAPTURE THAT KID!!! I'M GONNA KILL HIM!!!" Morgan roared, making all of the marines salute him. "Y-yes sir!!" they all responded in unison. "Daddy, that him! That's the kid who hit me! I told you he was no good!!" Helmeppo shouted, springing out of the broken box debris. The moment Axel saw him, he grabbed Helmeppo and dashed into the marine base, dragging the feline by his tail. Before Morgan himself could go chase the tiger, he looked out into the courtyard, noticing a small figure racing toward the prisoner.
Back in the courtyard, Coby had dashed up to the tied-up fur, and was desperately trying to loosen the knots in the ropes. "What is it with you kids?! Get out of here before the marines catch you! Kawaii yelled, as the dog continued to try to loosen the rope. "You shouldn't even be arrested! And I'm not afraid of these rotten marines! Cause one day, I'm gonna become a real marine! Just like Axel's gonna become the pirate king!"
Kawaii's ears perked up as his eyes widened, in shock of what he heard. "P-pirate king?! You mean that little kid's going after One Piece...by himself!?" he asked, stunned. "Yeah, I was surprised when I heard it too...but he's serious about it!" Coby replied. Just then, a loud BANG pierced the air, and Coby fell backwards, blood spilling from his torso. Kawaii looked back toward the marine base, feeling the cold, harsh glare of the Lieutenant holding a smoking rifle.
"Augh!! You little brat!! When my daddy finds you, he's gonna kill you!!" Helmeppo screamed, as he was dragged through the marine base by his tail. "Shut up! Tell me where Kawaii's sword is!" Axel replied, giving an extra hard tug on the feline's tail, making Helmeppo scream in agony. "Okay, okay!! It's in my room!! The next door on the right!!" he replied.
Axel kicked down the door, revealing a small, yet lavishly decorated room; covered with velvet, diamond trinkets and other expensive materials. "This room looks dumb." Axel remarked, leaving Helmeppo at the door as he searched around for the sword. "Shut up! Just grab that bastard's weapon and get out!" Helmeppo replied, earning him another kick to the face. "You're the only bastard here!" Axel said angrily, as the feline dropped to the ground, unmoving.
The tiger tore through the room, throwing things from on shelves, tossing garments from dressers, creating a mess of everything, until he found something odd in the back of the closet. Axel picked up a large metal staff, with a sword's handle on one end. "Huh...this is the only weapon in here. It kinda looks like a sword I guess...but how do you get the blade out?" Axel thought aloud, as he tried to unsheathe the weapon, to no avail.
After a few tries, the tiger gave up, then turned to leave the destroyed room, glancing out the window as he did. "Uh-oh...!" Axel gasped. Out in the courtyard, in front of Kawaii and Coby, stood about 15 marines, along with Morgan, each one of them pointing a rifle at the two furs. "On my mark!" Morgan shouted, as the men cocked their rifles.
Acting quickly, Axel smashed the window, then shot another 'Goro goro hook' right down in between the firing squad and his friends, quickly reeling him toward them. "Aim!!" Morgan shouted, making all the marines aim down their sights, just as the tiger impacted into the ground. Kawaii looked down to the tiger in horror, as he turned to face the firing squad, his small arms held out, as if he was trying to draw all of their focus to him. "FIRE!!!"
Kawaii closed his eyes as the marines all began to fire their rifles, the smell of gunpowder, the sound of bullets and smoke heavy in the courtyard air. After a few moments of non-stop bullet fire, Kawaii felt nothing, and opened his eyes expecting to see either bright lights and clouds, or burning rocks and brimstone. However, when he finally opened his eyes, he saw something even more unbelievable.
In front of the halfbreed was Axel, still standing, with his arms outstretched. In front of him however was every single bullet the marines had fired, floating motionlessly in the air. "What the...hell?" Kawaii gasped. Axel took a deep breath in, the let out a loud, booming "RAWR!!!", making the wall of bullets shoot backwards, right into the marines that shot them in the first place.
The marines all jumped back in shock, some of them being wounded from the bullets, while the tiger placed his paw on his hat and laughed. "Hehe, that's not gonna work with me!" Axel teased. "What the heck was that?! What are you?!" Kawaii demanded, looking down at the small tiger. "My name is Axel, and I'm the one who's gonna be the next Pirate King!" the tiger replied, showing a grin to the fur.
"'Pirate King Axel' huh?...interesting..." Kawaii remarked, as the tiger held up the metal weapon in front of him. "Is this your weapon?" Axel asked. "Yeah, that's it. But you're not gonna hand it over, are you?" Kawaii asked, making the tiger smile and shake his head. The halfbreed looked up to the marines, who were beginning to compose themselves, then back to the tiger and sighed.
"Resisting the navy will make me a criminal...but letting them kill me isn't about to happen anytime soon..." Kawaii began, as a slight grin broke across his maw. "...so I guess you've got yourself a crewmate, kid--er, Captain Axel!" he finished, making Axel's tail wag in happiness.
"Yay! My first companion!" the tiger exclaimed, making Kawaii roll his eyes. "Yeah, okay, yay. But now's not the time to celebrate! Hurry and untie me!" he shouted, as the marines had begun to re-advance toward them. "What the...how the hell did that kid repel our bullets?!" one of the marines shouted. "That brat...must've eaten one of the 'ocean's treasure'...a devil fruit." Morgan replied, as the tiger began to untie one of the ropes.
Lieutenant Morgan let out a loud growl, then pointed ahead toward the two furs. "Don't get afraid!! If bullets don't work, then use your swords!!" the feline roared, making all the men draw their blades, then charge toward the two. As the marines drew closer and closer, Axel finally managed to untie one of the knots, freeing the foxcoon's right arm. "Look, I did it! I got one!" the tiger said happily, holding up the rope triumphantly. "Just hand me my weapon!!" Kawaii shouted.
The tiger placed the staff in the foxcoon's paw, who gripped it tightly. "Do not move an inch, understand?" Kawaii said sternly, making Axel nod his head. "Good." The foxcoon began to spin the staff in his paw at high speeds, focusing as he did so. "Ring of..." Kawaii began to say, as the end of the staff emitted a small flame. The marines were close by now; in another second they would be within their swords' range. "...FIRE!!!"
Kawaii suddenly stopped spinning the staff, then slammed the lit bottom of the staff into the ground. Without warning, a circle of flames erupted from the ground surrounding the three furs, sending the marines reeling backwards once again. "Now flames too?! What on earth is going on here?!!" Morgan roared, staring at the wall of fire that surrounded his three targets.
Inside the flames, the foxcoon touched each of the ropes binding him with his staff, setting them ablaze and destroying them instantly. He then swung his staff sideways, dissipating the flames instantly. "That was too close..." the foxcoon sighed. "Cool! You can make fire with your staff!" Axel said, his eyes sparkling in awe.
"Oh, this is no staff. Watch." Kawaii replied, grabbing the handle of the staff in his other paw. The foxcoon began to focus, as the end of the handle began to glow bright red as the metal began to liquefy. Kawaii slowly moved the handle backwards, separating the glowing hot metal from its black sheath, until he had completely drawn the blade, and pointed it at the group of frightened marines.
"Now, let's get started, shall we?"
