Aaand, another work in progress photo. I found that stepping back further and zooming in with my nifty 10x zoom, I could get a more accurate photo (very little or no flash reflecting off the paint)
So, here is where the painting is currently at. I'm going to mess with the shop signs a bit more (add some shading to them, so they don't look so pasted on, and then the next step is the ground plane. Special attention will be paid to cast shadows of the characters... Planning on adding things like gum spots and cracks into the sidewalks... maybe a sewer cover somewhere, just to add realism. I want to make it feel like a real place.
About 75 hours of work so far.
Yep, looks like its going to breach the 100 hours mark. Well, you never know. Its worth more time to me to get it right.

This is for the Further Confusion 2008 art show. The theme of the convention is "The Fur East" =)
It had been too long since I had tackled a large multi-character piece, and I felt it was time to do so again. I'm also trying to bridge a gap between my normal working style (small not-too-complicated illustrations), and gallery style fine art, which I hope to do some of, soon.

OMG That's beautiful! The idea of scanning it now, just the background colored with white figures, it really makes me pay attention to all the little figures in the background I probably wouldn't notice if it was fully colored. Now I'll have to look for those lil characters when the final picture is uploaded. :)
this is mind boggling.....the detail is so wonderful...the shadows and...AUGH SO GREAT...your skill is very impressive....ive only recently started trying to work with paints again-and its PAINFUL to think about how far away i am to creating somthing like this-but at the same time wonderful because its so inspirational :)....cant wait to see more
Wow, this is incredible, but then I shouldn't expect any less from you, your pics are always incredible, and this one looks like it'll be the best yet.
Speaking of manholes, consider something unique, manhole covers are round because square ones can fall in (the opening is wider diagonally from corner to corner than the cover), but would everyone in the universe use round? What about hexagonal or similarly multi-sided, or perhaps even triangular? Would the problem persist with these, or would they be another solution?

Your work always suprises me, and it always seems soo realistic.
The linework before was incredible but the colouring and shading is miles better.
I'd wish i could draw/colour as well as you, but it wouldn't be fair to steal a tallent =3
