Fuuma shuriken, I believe the term to be. They are large, yeah, and they're commonly used as an indicator of "ninja" because they're large enough to be visible and used in melee or ranged, without them being the disposable regular shuriken (which were used to assassinate anyway, their whole point was that they could be concealed easily). A Fuuma isn't as easily concealed, but many versions can be in some way collapsed or dismantled...
