Steamfox Inspired Illo.
Hey y'all,
This is the only really 'finished' piece I did this year, a Coyote 'gleaner'.
I had the concept of the 'gleaners' down on paper for awhile, but hadn't drawn them. Then I saw this http://www.furaffinity.net/full/459223/ ...
And, went 'Coyote!' And, so, I went with it. Steamfox has a *ton* of great illos, folks. Check him out.

In my 'PostWar' realm, the 'gleaners' are the furs you talk to about finding things. They are semi-nomadic, and live in fortified camps at the outskirts of major cities.
Not every city got hit, but a majority did, with either nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons, or some combination of the three.
Most survivors avoid the cities, either due to radiation, fear of plague/contamination, or because they fear that monsters hide in them.
The 'gleaners', are therefore a necessary part of the 'PW' economy, finding the tools, weapons, and other things to keep the surviving equipment/vehicles/weapons working, and supplying folks with what they need and want.
'Gleaners' are considered nuts, by most. They take incredible risks, searching through the cities, braving radiation, lingering chem/bio agents, and structural failures in the old/damaged buildings, to find things that are needed, and requested.
Want an alternator, for a truck built a few years before the war? Need 300 yards of copper wire? Can't find a firing pin for M-39C autocannon?
Go to a 'gleaner' camp. For a price, anything can be procured at 'Rubble Mart'.
The fellow we see here, is a young 'gleaner', at work. He's got his equipment, gearbag, and weapon. His vehicle is tucked away, where he can get to it, if needed, for any large piece of 'scav' he may find.
He's been doing this for his whole life, since he was old enough to learn how to survive in the cities. Everything he owns, he found, himself. Never bought anything. He's traded, but never put any money-equivalent down for a single thing. He's had close-calls, and almost died a few times, but that's how things are.
I stole his vest from 'Van Zandt', in 'Reign Of Fire' His gloves are US military CVC ( Combat Vehicle Crew ) gloves. Rest of his gear is 'scav', picked up a piece at a time, on his travels.
His side-arm is a .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson, for 'large predators'.
And his rifle...
Let's see if anybody can figure it out. The flashlight is *not* standard, just duct-taped on. The front sight is a welded-on addition, and the stock-pad is a mod as well.
It's an M-16 variant.
Well, nobody even guessed, but here you go. The rifle is an M-231 Firing Port Weapon, from a an M-2 'Bradley' IFV.

hey great job on this! the colouring is solid work but what stands out is all the small and bigger details you've added to the picture. like the remains of the building behind him has cracks in the wall and... well this is just a really darn good picture^^
probaly your best yet =)

You know something? I really like the idea behind the image. It's always been a personal fantasy of mine to be the type of guy who survived a great cateclysim and would go about the place in a steam powered bulldozer bladed rig that could run on just about anything. I'd be hunting for "Knowlege" as well as useful relics of the past.
Thank you, Steamfox. I have a few other 'gleaners', that I'll be uploading eventually.
The idea came from the thought, that some kind of economy would pop up, after something like that. I figured, after all the major mayhem ended, and people got semi-organized, brigandage would be cut down on, and barter items would have to come from somewhere.
...Heh, sorry for rantin', I've spent years on this project.
