There's a reason why he doesn't use the No-Dachi all the time...
The energy stored away in the sword is all the built up energy that his father possessed and put into the blade.
Brief Bio:
Upon handing the sword to his youngest as part of his training, the weight of the blade was so incredibly imense that Grey could barely lift it and, in fact, struggled to carry it. The blade, made of Obsidian ore, wasn't the cause of the incredible weight, but in fact the spiritual pressure that weighted it down. As part of his training, he wasn't allowed to draw it, but to practice with it on his back. For the most part of his life, along with weighted clothing, he was told to train with the weight of the sword. His average training day consisted of an extra 200lbs of materials.
Eventually, Grey became curious. When he was young, he tried to unsheathe the blade, and that alone almost ended up costing him his life. The energy that streamed forth from the weapon was so intense, that he was picked up and thrown back quite a distance. Upon regaining consciousness, his father sat next to him, a stern and angry look about his face. For such an act of irresponsibility, he was punished and as a result, he had to carry his father's second No-Dachi on his back, an extra 100lbs.
Half of his training was over and it didn't seem like it would end. Taking a much-needed walk one day, he had accidentally made his way back to the spot that he had drawn his father's sword... but there was nothing there, in that forest that he hid away in curiosity that one day. For in that very spot that he had drawn his father's sword, was a crater, nearly a mile in diameter and nearly 30 feet deep...
To protect his own life, this punishment was fitting, and as a result, upon months of additional training through this method, Grey never unsheathed the sword again...
... until now.
It will be until after this event, that Grey will learn that he is still not strong enough to wield his father's power... and at what cost?
(If you did read this, to clear up the air, yes, his father -did- wield a two handed weapon (the No-Dachi) in -both- hands. Obsidian is an ore, taken straight out of some Volcanic regions. Rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, house this mineraloid. If you don't believe me, Wiki it. And if you're lazy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsidian Here's a link :p
And true, 300lbs would've been enough to crush an ordinary little boy... but Grey was, and still is, anything but ordinary.)

:nod: And when it was unsheathed under curious eyes the first time when Grey was little, he had barely pulled the weapon out of it's protective seal... needless to say, he hadn't even learned to harness it at the time.
It's like turning on a faucet really really quickly to full blast. The spray that erupts from the sink from the initial blast is kinda like the same in comparison. If he knew how to harness and control the energy, it wouldn't seem like such a massive explosion. It's why when Archimedies (Grey's father) draws it, nothing happens -until- he willingly unleashes his power himself.

The idea behind the swirling vortex of energy, I feel, is rather intimidating if you happen to find yourself sparring aganst an opponent if it was possible to produce such effects in real life. I'll have you know, if someone just burst into a large ball of swirling energy... I'd run my ass away if I was still normal. o.o;
I'm surprised you didn't say that it reminds you of DragonballZ... but then again, in that, the energy always looked "collected" around a character and not as "stringy" as it appears in this picture.
But yeah, call me a nerd, but I love the whole "power-up" deal if it's not too overly done. Like... screaming for half an hour. x.x

*Nods* My Kin's Katanas are actually materialized by the wind around him when he calls for them, same for a few various other objects, but thats just something random.
Guh, Dragon Ball Z. D: I dislike that show, its so...over muscled and lacks the use of thinking about whats going on, all you do is watch them yell and punch each other at breakneck speeds. c..c
Being a nerd isn't bad, I've made about 3 or four fan profiles for things like a Leaf Village ninja Tra, a Pirate Tra, one of him going to a normal school....oh, thats 3 there. o:
