Yeah, that part is kinda ~eh. The "Sparkler" thing is also kinda cute imo. And there's a really sad and well written story with both. Though, I am a bit annoyed there's not more "bittersweet" fics around... and will cut before I trail off. As for Derpy's partners, she's been shipped with quite a few. Though, her first "partner" was Raindrops, the other "delivery mare", then I can't recall if it was Whooves or Carrot Top that came second, the the other one last... though, if I recall, she has been paired with a few others out of random, like Pierce.
I remember that one; it wasn't very long. It was told mostly in flashback, and I think one could call the story bittersweet or outright sad, depending on how one reads into some of the events that were talked about.
There's another fan theory -- I saw it depicted in one or maybe two single-page comics -- in which Dinky resulted from a mishap between Derpy and a magic mirror. Not sure how I feel about that origin story, though...

As for why Dinky then would be a unicorn with the magic mirror, there are two hypotheses for that. However, I wonder if you've had enough already!

also now all i can think about is the magic mirror from"homeowner" a porn game, one of the things you can do is click on a mirror and a male version of yourself appears and fucks you (main character is female)... so derpy was fucked by herself and somehow she concieved... and yet dinky has no malformations of any type!? no mutations or anything else that would occur from brother and sister breeding... heck it would be even worse since it's almost exactly the same DNA... who knows

Another fan theory is that she looked into a magic mirror at the same time as a unicorn named Sparkler, and the result was a foal with the traits of both Derpy and Sparkler.
Now, why Derpy would be left as the caretaker, let alone on her own? That's beyond even the level of detail I've gone into about that ^_^;
