The thunder roared outside, possibly rolling over the long hills through the thick forests and as far as Jrynatu, we sat by the fire, me, my twin brother our parents and little sister who had just come into the world but possibly no more then a week ago. I could here her cry when the thunder boomed close to our small farm house, she was afraid. I looked over at mother who then looked at me.
“Zovfrad go tend the horses they must be terrified of this storm and bring your brother with you.” she spoke in a hushed and calm voice but her face showed terror, I nodded and got up, my brother following quickly behind me, he rarely spoke to anyone except me, not even mother or father. Father wasn't truly our father, our father had disappeared many years ago when me and my brother had just begun to speak, I could still remember his face as vivid as though he still sat in the chair my mother now favoured.
Our stepfather I guess it would be called, was Human, All of us, even my mother and little half-sister would outlive him, even a good handful if not most of the town-folk not far away would. We where Alfa's better known as Elves by the Humans that had so long ago torn our world and made it theirs. I still did not like that we had once occupied most of this land known as Lradoraid and that they had stolen it from us killing off many of our Native Animals including a good handful of Dragons. I shook my head pulling on the heavy packed warm fur coat I'd gotten last winter. I looked back once more and saw my mother singing by the fire to the newborn, it made me smile.
We rushed out the door and where almost instantly hit by a wall of cold wind, it bit into the bare skin of my cheeks and threw my long hair flying backwards to. My brother shivered beside me, I nudged him encouragingly.
“Let's go we have some work to do,” I said, my brother nodded shielding his eyes with the long eyelashes natural to both males and females of our Elven Race. We hurried across the small field careful not to step on any of mother's flowers or vegetables she grew soon we where across our thin patched shoe's soaked with muddy water but that was not what we worried about. The gate to the meadows was flung open moving on one hinge in the violent wind.
I squinted my eyes together and could see the herd of Horses huddled together on the far side of the pasture, occasionally one of the older horses would nip each other in desperation to be shielded in the thick of all the others. We tried calling several of the horses names but none turned to look at us for our voices where silenced in the hissing wind of the storm.
We bounded forward at once together hurrying quickly the icy rain and wind continued to sting my cheeks and bare hands as I held them out to balance myself in the muddy grass. We reached the horses and they scattered out before quickly returning to us, Already well use to the weather and way to direct them I took the Palomino Mare's (my horse) lead rope in my hand, hushing her to keep her calm I started her towards the barn, beside me my twin took his Dunn Stallion by the lead, the others following quickly behind us. The Mare started rebelling my lead as Thunder roared once more and suddenly a Lightning Bolt hit the house, instantly the roof began to sink inwards with the strike and force of raining pelting above it started to smolder and smoke began to come up in big puffs, soon I could see the licking of flames in the cracks of the roof, the house was on fire!
I quickly hurried, we finished with the horses putting them into individual standing stalls and locking the doors behind them, only the stallions and Damns were placed into bigger stall enough to kick and lay down for both a mare and her foal. We hurried outside and saw from the flaming house a figure, to dark to see we rushed across the field to help the person coming out. We could here yelling and soon realized it was our stepfather with our little sister, Kadar my twin took her from him as he handed her over.
“Where is mother? Is she still in the House?!” I yelled above the roaring of the now crazy flames
“Yes! I am going into get her, she is frozen of fear! I will try hard to get her out, go to the barn away from the flames and Elements of the Weather, I don't want Danielle to get sick!” He yelled back, and just like that turned back and braved the flames, I knew.. the moment I'd shared by the fire with the two would be my last memories with my parents, but we turned and hurried back for the sake of our little half-sister. We soon returned to the Barn and settled in a place not yet damped by the rain that leaked through the roof. For awhile me and my brother took turns rocking with Danielle and walking back and forth occasionally we would get up to see to the horses then we fell asleep despite the roaring of the thunder and screaming of the wind.
When we woke the storm had stopped and there was still no sine of either mother or father, they had died no doubt through the night in the flames probably backed to crisps somewhere along the wooden remains of rubel that remained of the only home we'd known.
“We can no longer stay here brother, let us go to town we must find shelter for sister's sake” my brother spoke quietly not to wake the little bundle of sleeping baby and blankets beside us.
“Yes, stay with Danielle I will go get the horses ready as well as get as many things as we can take with us, We will go see Ronald he will know what to do”
“The old Man who speaks of tales long ago?” Brother asked, all I did was nod and I hurried off.
Upon our favoured horses me and my brother looked at the remains of the house, flowers had been placed in front from mother's garden in memory of our parents that where now gone. We said our goodbyes to our only home we had known in this life and headed north beyond the meadows we had once owned towards the Village that Ronald had settled not long ago. Once we where almost far enough not to see the property we stopped and turned on our horses for one more glance, we didn't know yet, but we wouldn't come back for a long time.
As we travelled the half day journey to the city we used a small portion of our food to snack and have meals, there was no meat for not often did Elves feast upon it unless small game such as Rabbit or the occasional bigger game that gave us tender Venison. We had created a mash and had fed Danielle at the beginning of the trek when she had cried, since then she hadn't cried since with her little stomach filled there was no need to was there?
By the time we had reached the outside of the town the sun was ready to set upon the horizon, the sky above us was painted tones of Pink, Red and Purple do to the descending sun, it looked beautiful. We looked around there had been little damage done here, perhaps I had been wrong, it was a storm that had torn through the outer boundaries of towns and villages. Our horses where long since tired I got off brother following close behind, we reared in the horses taking them slowly as we made our descent from the rocky slopes up high, The town was located in a Valley surrounded by big hills, not to be mistaken as mountains but some looked that way, it really was a bad place for a town but it was pretty dry yet moist in these parts.
