Folks, this is probably the closest I'm gonna get to an "emotional" pic for a long time. It's probably the first "reaction" pic I've done, ever. It was prompted by some of the comments to this journal, and this pic.
Okay, maybe not just those two, they're just the latest examples of a trend I've observed over the years of urban musical genres eliciting a level of disgust seldom seen in this fandom. And I'm sure they're not the only types of music with a minimal following amongst furries, but you don't often see people going out of their way to make sure you know they hate/despise/can't stand (for example) country, classical or gospel (especially that last one given the number of atheists within furry). Nope, Just these two. If you looked at the two links above, you know what they are.
Now, I don't listen to all examples of these two genres. Indeed, the video referenced in the pic linked above I found rather...ehhh (and had to power up my own mp3 player to get it out of my head). But I don't feel any ill will to musical genres I don't listen to, or the people who listen to them. I do not hate/despise/can't stand for example, death metal (but I'd be hard-pressed to go out of my way to find something in that genre that I'd listen to more than once, even though I'll occasionally watch Metalocalypse). I'd state my feelings toward metal/rock/ as indifference. I'd like to think maybe some of these folks are mis-stating their own indifference as an active dislike.
Then again I talked about this a year ago in this journal. Even now it affects my decisions on whether to +watch somebody or +fave something they drew. And it bugs me enough that seeing some of the comments on the two referenced submissions finally prompted me to do a pic like this. If this is the closest I've gotten to drama after 10 years of involvement in this fandom, I must be doing exceptionally well. I don't think the text really conveys what I was thinking at the time (it changed several times over the past 24 hours), but I spent enough hours coloring it that it'd be a waste not to post it, so here it is.

I don't know about the drama going on about all this and I tend to stay far away from it all if possible, but perhaps it is less about the genre than it is about the content. I know that I, personally, like just about every genre of music, but I dislike music when it either objectifies any human being or glorifies a lifestyle based on violence and/or money being the only thing that matters.
I love several hip hop and rap artists, but I can't stand those who only refer to women as "hos" and the only way women are portrayed in their videos or lyrics is that of a sexual object. For an example, all you have to look at is the "superman dat hoe" song.
Now I do not limit this to only hip hop either. I have the same feelings for country artists like Toby Keith and his lot of overgrown little boy "real man" music.
If you looked at my CD changer right now, you would see everything from rap, to techno, to folk, to classic rock ... I don't limit my taste in music due to the genre, but I do if the person claiming to be an artist does nothing with the medium other than use it for some teenage wet dream all grown up.

I understand totally about "gangsta" rap. I don't listen to it either--it soesn't speak to me, and I live in an urban area -- it's an unpleasant reminder of a mindset that puts ordinary folks at risk of bodily harm.
But R&B? At worst it could be accused of being is sappy, and it's often lumped in with the above. At most, it should foster indifference.

This picture spoke to me quite a lot as the message could refer pretty strongly to me...
The reason I don't like it (and I'm well aware of how ironic this sounds from a metal listener) is because the whole sound of it sounds very violent to me. However, this is just the corner of the genre I've been exposed to - much like how everyone thought that metal was composed of screaming, swearing and blatant guitar torture thanks to the image of it promoted in around 2000 by the idiot Durst. The image that you (MorriLeFay) described is, I think, what a lot of people are exposed to and what people see it as. (I actually love your description of the content - I'll have to remember that).
But I also have to mention what I really like about this picture - her headphones. I love seeing how some furry artists adapt things for different body types.

Not that I'm attempting to convert anyone, but the two tracks I listed on her player were meant to illustrate the opposite of the stereotype. They can be heard on YouTube, but only the first has an actual video at this point.
I did up the headphones in a rather obvious manner so it would be clear even from a thumbnail that was listening to something that might be pertinent to the pic. Adding the ear hooks was kind of an afterthought, since without them one would wonder how they stayed up there (well at least I would). I also occasionally depict design accomodations in jeans/trousers for tails.

You make a good point and I would agree that people use hyperbole to state an active dislike (not just furries, of course).
Given the choice, I don't listen to country or rap, but I can easily name a few songs in each that I like. As a genre though, I'm turned off by the standard themes and common messages telling the listener they have to act a certain way and desire specific things or be regarded as failures. As I don't share the same values I seek out music that I relate to better.
I don't hate people for their preference in music, and if a friend told me i really need to hear a certain song I would, but in general I would avoid or limit my exposure to environments where I'd be forced to listen to it. Thank goodness for MP3 players - since anyone can listen to what they like.
Personally, I favor techno, classical, jazz, soft rock, broadway showtunes, and anime soundtracks.

Oh yes, practically none of furry's maladies are confined to its borders. As I mentioned in the journal I linked to near the end of the desc, listening to novelty music gave me the ability to listen to a wide variety of stuff. I have numerous examples of techno (thanks to satellite radio) and a couple of anime/ JRPG singles on my MP3 (as well as the theme to Battle Royale that I analog-holed off the dvd),do occasionally listen to familiar classical tunes. I listen to the Opie & Anthony Show, which means I hear a lot of rock. I can even listen to Honkytonk Badonkadonk (which I heard on O&A's show), and that song is reviled by country fans :D
And at the other end of the spectrum, I have Kramer Racist Rap (also due to O&A) on my 'player too. But only because it makes fun of Michael R., and that he pretty much ended his second career with that outburst.
For the record, I've yet to see anyone expressing such opinions extend their distaste to the people who don't agree with them. I just don't care to run into any.

Thanks! It's only the second time I've done a dusk scene, and I picked a number of details, from the character of mine I chose (Tatiana), to her attire and the backdrop, in hopes of conveying to the viewer what kind of music she may be listening to, even if the viewer tl,dr's on the description.
I know what you mean, RR. People get bent out of shape over anything these days. They complain about movies, tv, music and books without even have read , seen or listen to them to make that judgement. So, I feel the same as your character in your pic. What I like or dislike is my decision, end of disgession.
I kind of made it up on the spot. It's meant to represent one of those generic Chinese MP4 player devices, much like those seen in the gallery section of http://www.mympxplayer.org .
I could have based it upon a real device, but I didn't think to look up a photo reference while I drew this.

I'm of several minds on this one.
Personally, THWHOK-THWOK-SCRATCH played over and over again does zilch for me whatsoever.
And people driving down the street blasting it through their car speakers at full volume make me wish for a nice anti-tank rocket.
But if that's what ya wanna listen to, more power to ya, I say! :)
My main problem is with folks who think their particular favorite music is the be all and end all of music, whether it be big band, rock, folk, funk, old time R&B, gospel, urban, classical, country, whatever....
Every type of music has something to offer. You just have to listen for it.
'Course, Sturgeon's Law being what it is, you sometimes hafta go through a lotta chaff to get to the gold... :)

"Perhaps it's your own problem that you take offense to the fact that someone hates a genre."[i]
???
That's a gross oversimplification. Check out the journal I linked to in the fourth paragraph of the desc for some background on why this observation gave me an unsettling vibe.
Being front-and-center to that Michael Richards-esque outburst made me notice that [i]no other genres (with the rare exception of country) were the targets of specific disdain across a large sampling of artist's profiles, even though there are many styles of music that you can bet money that none of these folks listen to either. If a whole range of music types were being characterized as bile-inducing, there wouldn't be anything to notice.

People who say they hate rap... probably only see the bad side of rap. People who say they hate country... probably only see the bad side of country. Truth be told there's an anti-establishment, underground, political side to both those forms of music, and that's exactly what I like about them.
After the initial flurry of responses died down, I had time to think about this and came to a better understanding of what bothered me enough to draw this pic...
It's not so much folks disliking rap/hip-hop/r&b. On a one-to-one basis it's pretty meaningless ("like, whatever dude"). It's that so many folks have independently gone out of their way to single those out above all other forms of music that they'd rather not to listen to. Taken as a whole, it just has a sinister air to it (Outsider: "Gee, so many of these folks basically saying they hate "black" music above all other genres...I wonder what's behind that?") and it's completely at odds with this fandom's legendary penchant for 'tolerance', whether you believe it's genuine or not.
If it was easy to find examples of folks going out of their way to state in their profiles that they (for example) "despised techno", "hated metal", "can't stand grunge" etc, there'd be nothing to notice. I'm sure they're out there--they just aren't strongly motivated to say so.
Personally, I rather hear what you enjoy listening to. Whatever's omitted from that sort of statement you know isn't up for discussion.

Yeah, those are definitely good points. I'm thinking people feel the need to distance themselves from some of the stereotypes associated with those genres, however sinister that thought process may actually be. Though I bet a large amount do it because so many others do, which is not particularly good either.
I've noticed it too and decided a while ago to do away with that kind of unnecessary negativity myself.
