Commission for
soul4hdwn of a... black snake naga character whose name was not yet given.
Shading blacks is always tricky, but I think it came out okay. Been experimenting a mild light coming from the center in a semi-dim room effect... does he look like he's laid on his coils at all, at least?
Edit: posted a brighter version for darker monitors here.

It's freaking difficult to. How are you supposed to render plasticity with shadow with something that supposedly is already dark? Light can only help so much, so most of the time, I end up just using a far more pale hue, shade it, and then compensate with external shadows.
The answer is; "incredibly borderline impossible!" Mostly because of the "dark on one monitor" vs "not dark on another". It's why lots of games now which depend on darkness for atmosphere have included that triple box "Set your brightness so you can barely/can't see box X". All monitors just aren't created equal - but you can still do the best you possibly can. :O
Big ol' chunk of snake. I approve of this. ♥
And yeah, the shading is pretty damn good with this. Just on the lower half of the picture, I think it needs a little bit more reflected light coming from the blankets, on the right-hand side of his waist-coil. Seems a bit too dark. But that's just a little niggly bit. Overall the picture's fab~
