Bright rays of energy shone out from Xan’s eyes and mouth as the ancient ritual began to reshape his body. His ears grew longer and sharper, his muzzle shorter and his hands and feet shifting to become paws. He withdrew from his mate, falling onto all fours upon the altar as his muscles and bones changed to suit his new form. Blue energy rose up from the runes forming a wall of light around the dais.

Rebantee watched first in wonder as her mate was transformed, then in concern as Xan fell to lie motionless on the stone altar. Fearing the worst she quickly assumed her humanoid form and rushed to listen for any signs of life.
