Xan stirred from his slumber, awakening to the soft sounds of his companion’s breathing, her scent in his nostrils, her fur against his cheek. He turned his head to see if Rebantee was awake only to gaze into her beautiful eyes. She had returned to her animal form while he had dozed and remained alert to guard over him. With a glance she indicated that he should stand, and in a graceful movement she also climbed to her feet.

Rebantee beckoned to her new mate to follow as she set off into the ruins that she called home. Xan followed willingly as Rebantee ran ahead playfully, twisting between crumbling stone walls and broken columns. Her route finally led them to the centre of the temple complex, the last remnants of the once proud building. Rebantee glanced back at Xan before skipping into the darkening entrance. Xan lost sight of her as soon as black fur met shadows.
