I had always been of the thought that ears back meant that they were either afraid, angry, or shy?

Oh, no. In fact, if a wolf is trotting up to you, it's body stiff, it's eyes focused intently on you, and it's ears are totally forward you better get out of there! Ears back is a sign of vulnerability, like he is intentionally dulling one of his senses in front of me, to show me he trusts me.

When a nervous dog has it's ears back, it's because it is afraid of you, and it is trying to tell you "Look, I am nervous, I mean you no harm, please... leave me alone"

Exactly right my friend. There was so much I had to learn that wasn't explained to me... And a lot that could not be explained, that only the wolves could teach me.
