A dragon dance through Chinatown, celebrating the Chinese New Year.
Acrylic paints on 20"x30"illustration board - the original painting will be at the Further Confusion 2008 art show.
This painting took approximately 120 hours to complete.
All of the characters depicted are my own original characters - several of them are recurring characters thoughout my artwork - including Cirrus the eastern blue dragoness, Candi the red panda, Antarctica the blue vixen, Echo the genet, Vienna the arctic roo, Kristania(Misty)the ringtail cat, and Ace the black jackal.
This is a fictional Chinatown - the building designs are my own creation - the gateway was inspired by the Chinatown gateway in London, however, and the entire piece was inspired by visiting San Francisco's Chinatown.

Wow... I never saw such a perfect painting before, that's almost better like the paintings from Albrecht Dürer (my favorite artist from the last few centuries)
You're really perfect! The eexpressions, the buildings, every furry, everything is so realistic and wonderful painted <3

I've been waiting in anticipation for the final piece-- it's amazing! I love the lighting; I immediately got a sense of time and place from it and how it works with the architecture (which, by the way, is remarkable) and the characters. This is so lively and filled with little details (like what you mentioned before with the cat sitting in the open window, etcetera). It makes the piece unendingly interesting to look at.
Man, this is just a treat to look at... I adore your attention to detail, and the fact that you used a lot of recurring characters. I see you and Noriko! ^^ I also see a corgi, yay cute! I can spend forever looking at this piece, you did such a fantastic job. Your skill and dedication is obvious by how gorgeous this turned out. I loved seeing the progress shots along the way too, it was nice to build up all the way to the finished painting. I can't wait to see it in person at FC, and I hope you'll have some larger sized prints to sell at some point too. I'd love to have a big print of it on my wall, but I'm betting I'd be outbod FAST on the original. XD It's inspiring, Kacey, to see you do stuff like this. It makes me want to push myself as an artist so I can reach this level someday. ^^
holy effing crap. this is gorgeous; you really have a serious handle on acrylics. it retains a wonderful vibrancy. i wonder if you'd ever be making large prints/posters of this? it's something you can really look at for a long time -- you did a great job with the detail and perspective. :>
I will be making large prints of the piece, but I don't yet know what sizes I will be making available. My printer can handle no larger than 13"x19" paper, but I could have a 3rd party printer do some poster sized prints, if there were an interest in such a thing.
And thank you very much =D

its a masterpiece. I've never seen such detailed artwork with vibrant beautiful colors like this. You are the goddess of furry artwork, for you take it to a level that no one else has before. I really love the life in this painting. You should be very proud of yourself.
Amazing piece. The in progress shots were very interesting for me, I love to see how people work, especially paint since that is what I find the hardest. My favorite thing in this is very strange; I simply love how you rendered the shadow from the shop sign on the upper left! Did you have to get a lot of reference for the scenery, or is it just from your imagination?
Thank you =D
I like seeing how other artists work, as well... so I enjoy seeing WIPs
You know, that shadow is one of my favorite parts, as well. It wasn't one of the things that was planned in my mind - it was just something I decided to do when I was painting that section, and I was happily surprised with how well it turned out.
As far as reference material goes, I collected many images of chinatowns, and of dragon and lion dances - and I used those images for inspiration, but I didn't use any direct reference while I drew or painted the piece. I wanted it to have more of an air of fantasy about it, rather than try to make it look photorealistic... So it is all from my imagination, but inspired by looking at some images and getting ideas before I got started =)

This left me simply speachless. I've spent the last 5-10minutes just looking at it and taking in all of teh little details. I think my favorite part is looking at all of the characters interacting with each other, and all of the intresting speices you chose to put in, like the cock-a-too! Amazeing shadowing and use of unique characters.
You blow me away every time you post artwork, I fave one because its a favorite, but then imediately the next one I want to fave to. I might as well just +fav your entire freakin' gallery!

I've been watching this picture's progress from start to finish, and it is nothing short of a masterpiece. And to be quite honest, I think that just working on this for 120 hours is an award winning achievement by itself!
Anyway, thank you for sharing every piece of this beautiful work of art, seeing and comparing the original sketch WIP's to the final product just makes it feel so much more amazing!

This is favorited and definitely in the list for all time favorites :)

Oh lordy, this is fabulous. Thank you so much for posting the WIPs. This is such an inspiring piece of work -- even though I just got off work, I want to leap to my drawing table and get to cracking something out.
Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful piece of art with us. I am really looking forward to seeing it this FC.

Starting from the left... The sign with the fan says 'clothing store', the sign with the rat says 'Happy New Year' (next year is year of the rat...), the vertical sign attached to the building says "jade tiger", the red and gold awning with the lanterns hanging off it says "beautiful divine city", the sign over the door that the wolf is opening says "high mountain dim sum", and the yellow/red sign on the building on the other side of the road says "bright dragon inn".
Is it just me, or on the second floor of the building to the left of the gate, is that Dale from Chip and Dale? and just around the corner sits the Warner Brothers (and the Warner sister Dot)...
I don't see anyone else I recognize but it is truly an amazing piece of art.

You must just have cartoon characters on the brain =). All of the characters in this piece are my original characters. The ones on the balcony are pretty hard to see - theres the lizard, the cockatoo, and around the corner is a fox, a mouse, and a canine mix... On the escalator is a siamese, in the building looking out the windows on the other side of the street is a bull terrier, a cat and a mouse.
Ah, quite enjoyable.
I must get you a picture of the gate to Chinatown in Los Angeles

The thing I love most about your work is the quality. Thank you for making very crisp, clear images that go beyond mere competence but are also masterful in execution. I like that "furry" artwork is becoming more complex. I hope to see more artists like yourself validating the genre, if you don't mind me using those terms.. :)
Thanks very much =D That makes me happy to hear - especially since I've not been working with the medium long enough to consider what I do more than experimentational. I'm a perfectionist though, so I keep working on it until it looks good to me...
I would like to continue doing this kind of work in the fandom, definitely. Also though, I've decided that I enjoy painting scenery so much, that I want to be a landscape/cityscape painter for galleries.

"Well, I went shopping in Chinatown and all of a sudden, there was this big red DRAGON. It was a paper one moved by dancers but they made it look so real I almost forgot what I went shopping for. It was a long one too, so I leaned backagainst the lampost, watched it pass, and at the same time looked at the other spectators. It was fun to watch them too. Kids with baloons. Someone trying to get their digital camera to work right. (I think they finally did.) All in all, a fun experience I didn't expect. We ought to go down there tomorrow because I never did get what I went there for. Who knows? Maybe they'll have a BLUE dragon dancing next!"
A picture to inspire not just a single thought or feeling, but a whole story.
Mmmmm.... Good stuff.

I think I will be offering multiple sizes of prints for this... regular size prints (8.5"x11") will be $10 - 11"x14" prints will be $25 - and we will probably offer some larger ones than that - I don't know if we'll have ones made that are actual size, but I think it would be neat. The costs for poster size prints would depend on cost of production.
The largest prints my printer is capable of making is 13"x19", and the original is 20"x30" so I would need to find a competent 3rd party printing service.
But when I sell the original, I'd like a poster print for myself, totally.

:D awesome, i'd so be going for the larger print :3! Hope your able to find a good printing service as well. As much as i'd love the original i know i cant afford it :P haha
This would look so awesome in large up on the wall of my bedroom haha
:D thankies for the super fast reply as well! *hugs*

Every one else has already used almost every word I could come up with, Kacey. I got to watch it grow from sketch to 'this'. I so wish I had a large screen display so I could zoom in with greater detail and enjoy it even more. Every time you put pen to paper or brush to paint you out-do yourself.
Congratulations, my friend, you've done it again <happy grin>! This is a true masterpiece that commands attention with all its detail, balance of color, and the expressions on even the most minor of characters. Yes, I too will want a print when you get around to making them.

Yes, yes, beautiful, stunning, perfect in every way, but I have on question: Why do furries, fantastic blue furries at that, need a fake dragon? I'm sure this is all kind of politically incorrect in this fantasy world to by puppeting around a fake dragon if there are dragon people out and about... it's not that this culture exclusively mammalian, since I see a cockatoo and a lizard of some sort... maybe the mammals are a selective elite and the non-mammals aren't allowed to walk the streets. Even the corgi is a class above the lowly non-mammals... maybe the dragon is a symbol of humiliation and subjugation, celebrating another year of oppression >.> Or maybe I'm reading a bit too much into the picture...
OMG there's a sniper on the roof, everyone duck!!!

It helps a lot that they are fluid acrylics.... I can use them more like watercolors, and slowly build up layers to the rich colors I desire...
But also I've been using them exclusively for a year or so now, so a lot of practice definitely helps. Regular tubed acrylics were what I used before I discovered fluid acrylics - and I mixed them with water and acrylic glazing liquid as a retardant.

This is stupendous, an absolute marvel of a true genious!
Your skill outranks numerous people on here, and the only real rivals I would say you have here are DarkNatasha and Frogsbreath, and probably a few people on DeviantArt.

I think the human float thingy would be intensely creepy... but otherwise that sounds pretty cool =).
Actually I did a drawing along those lines - reversing animal and human roles, that is - in which a lion and a cheetah are lounging about in a hunting lodge ... with human trophy heads over the fireplace, and a fierce looking human taxidermy in the corner... I thought it was pretty funny. One of the human heads turned out looking a lot like Harry Potter - and another looked like Shaggy from Scooby Doo - but those were accidental ^.^,,

I'm probably behind the times, but this is the first time I've seen this piece. It's wonderful, and I wish I could see an even bigger full view, just to catch all the details. I love the little pink cockatoo you've got hidden on a balcony, and all the swishy tails. I think I like the Boar daddy most of all. :3
Good.
Part of me just wants to say... don't sell it. This thing is, in my opinion, your finest, most complicated work. Your masterpiece, so to speak. The image that you spent so much time on, and turned out so well... If you do sell it, sell a high-quality print, or a print that has some more prominent parts painted back on like I've seen other professional artists do.

I'm quite content with the piece still - it has all my favorite personal characters in it, and I created an environment I wanted to see...
I'm very happy to have it on my wall. But someday if the right buyer comes along, someone I know who would take good care of it and enjoy it as much as I do, I'd be happy to sell it as well. Thats what it was created for...

This picture always stuns me whenever I see it ... I wish I had been able to see the RL version too, it would blow any digital version away (no offense). You've really done a marvellous job on this, Kacey. Sorry for not commenting sooner I ... just had no idea what to write XD.
Would be nice to see more of Cirrus the dragoness too :)
