He asked for "a dragon. No red color, and no fur. Just a big, kind-looking carnivorous dragon."
A kind looking carnivore... Now that's something.
Then I got an idea...
This is Mr Green Notquitepeace. He turned carnivore due to ethical reasons - he loves trees and hates anything that threatens them. Vegetarians, beavers and lumberjacks are at the top of his hate-list. That's why there aren't any vegtarian beaver lumberjacks left in the world anymore.

Crits please.

I really love your painting style, it's nice to see some artists actually paint and take more classic approaches to art instead of depending on the latest filters to get an effect. I love how you're still able to create such a great form and leaving other areas less over-rendered to give the viewer a story.
Out of curiosity wheat are you using to create the piece?

Hahah, same, I use Painter X and use 2 major brushes one for just laying down flats and one for detail/painting.
It's nice to see another Painter fan.
Work like this reminds me of Henry Yan (http://www.henryyanart.com) where you're just able to see a lot more because artists know how to work the "strokes" (hur hur). It's something I'm learning to do myself. I just feel pictures like yours and his come off more alive that way. :)

Likewise, pleased to meet you. I'm Fan, Painter Fan. :]
Thanks. Yes, that's something I'm aiming at... Strokes (and their absence, blending, blurring, moving, fighting, etc) are the subject of the picture not what's portraid, really. I feel like a kindergartener when they scramble and do what they want instead of listening to me, which is often.
And sometimes if you hide something or leave parts untold, it says much more than it would if you spelled out everything. That's a feeling I love.
Ofcourse it's an honor to be compared to Henry Yan. He's a live master.
I can't say he was an exceptionally important inspiration to me... It's kind of weird, I found him several years back, saved the pictures in an inspiration folder on my drive, forgot them and haven't looked at them ever since, but now i can't help but observe that the style I've come to is similar to Yan's... This is an enormous re-discovery for me. Thanks!

Hee hee, that's funny! I love the big hands and feet, and his goofy expression.
The colours and brushwork on the dragon and the tree next to him are very striking and expressive. There's a lot of energy there; it makes me smile. The glitter of scales on the right arm is particularly nice.

                    Thankies. :]
Speaking of 3d... I'm doing a warmup of sorts, should post the results in a few days. Warmup for a project i've been thinking about for a few months, but am not sure I'm good enought to handle it. It has something to do with your work, so here's a heads up for you in advance. :]

Hahaha, oh that's great! :D Didn't expect that to come up. Great stuff, really great stuff.
Your style seems really straigtforward, crude, but living up to its capability to describe the form and depth with great style/realism mash.
Dude - you're a f***ing legend. :D All I can say. Keep practicing. Keep creating.

                    Hahahah, legend... I wish! :D
Thanks!
(In retrospective... Seems I haven't followed your breif at all: it looks like an oversized goblin with wings instead of dragon; the blood is red; he has fur in his ears and a beard; he's relatively medium-sized; stressed/goofy looking instead of kind and he's only carnivorous by choise, not biology. :] )
            Thanks!

Well now, you've followed it close enough. :D It fits the general description of the dragon's appearance which is quite cool, but I what I did notice is that you used the nasal part of the skull from either a camel or a goat. :D And dragons don't really have ears, but come to think of it this picture just has them in there perfectly.
But anyway, the picture's really great. Forget the minor bits you left out. XD That's why you're an artist. :3

I'll tell him that you're the head of an organisation protecting rights of herbivores gone carnivore, he should forgive you your sin in favor of a bright future for global carnivourosity. :]
(I'm vegetarian too, btw. But he doesn't touch me, cause he's affraid I'd hit Alt+F4 and refuse to save...)

Crit? Well, sure! I love the movement. And green can be a hard color to work with. I envy your being able to toss it about like that with seeming abandon. There's almost a sense of the 'camera' moving in on the moment. It's fun seeing photographic effects captured in 'paint,' even digital paint. I think the hands are more strong in this one than the last one. One of the most subtle effects, the dim red under his wings is utterly delicious.
That being said, I don't see the relationship between dragon and blood smear. Oh, sure, there's text there to tell me, but I can't tell what just happened. I also don't get the idea he's guarding the tree so much. The main tree's texture doesn't look very leaf-like to me; it's the one thing that doesn't look very painterly.
Otherwise, there's lots of nifty textures, brushstrokes and energy in this one and the composition's good. Hope this is what you were looking for!

Many many thanks again! Extremely helpful.
Yes, I failed to tell the story in visual means, so I resorted to text, both on and off the picture. If I was to repeat this picture, I'd give much more attention to him guarding the tree (and try to do better, since now it isn't perfectly clear that he's guarding it) and make the smear barely noticeable in the background, sort of an easter egg surprise that one finds on the way exploring the picture... I confess, I had absolutely no ideas how to stage them, so they told a story well... =/
About the tree - yes, keeping discoveries and/or unusual accidents while disregarding the final result as a whole is my deadly sin. :] That tree was such an accident - I liked the smudgy puke for leaves thing.
Once again, many thanks!
