You can find cylinders and players if you're willing to spend big bucks. I mostly do yard sales, charity bazaars and a few flea markets, but I don't go where the antiques are. I did see cylinders once, a whole box of them, but that's it.
Record players are easy to get in garage sales, at least, in my area. I don't recommend buying a new one because they're poorly built and you pay extra just for USB adaptability. All you really need is a turntable and something you can connect it to, like a mixer or an old receiver with a phono input.

You kids these days and your new-fangled shellac recording discs!
I once over a decade ago found a box of cylinders at the thrift store. Alas, I was a young bun back then, and sadly couldn't really spare the money back then. Same thing around the same time when I found a box of piano rolls there. To this day I regret passing up on both of those simply due to being poor. :(
But, yes! Yay for cylinders! :D

Do you have any idea until when they produced cylinders at all? I know at one point they were ditched and replaced by records because of the short playtime. Records back then were worse quality though, for as far as I know, so I wonder how good the best quality cylinders sounded.
Alas, I don't think I could really tell you much that you can't find out on Wikipedia. I actually don't know a whole lot about these cylinders. :) Though as I understand, disc machines were cheaper, and discs are a lot easier and more convenient to store. I think I heard that part of it was marketing as well. In this early format war, Edison saw it as a dictation machine, and the first big selling popular music was on disc. I could be remembering wrong though!
I think I heard this on a very fascinating 5-part documentary on the record industry, Twighlight of the Gods ( http://historyofrecording.org/ ). Unfortunately it seems you are not allowed to listen to it outside of Canada. Maybe I can see if any of my Canadian friends could help me get my hands on it, as I would love to hear it again.

Oh! I found them in a listenable location! I highly recommend these if you are at all interested in the history of the record industry! :)
