Well this is my second take at trying to make hair in blender. Trust me on this one, it's much better than my first attempt. };8>
Now I thought about this after I was watching the animation.. I'm not sure what his/her name is but I realize that their is a member here that has an avatar that looks like a ping-pong ball with hair. This isn't him!. My ping-pong ball is green. =) Actually it's green so one can see what parts of the hair are truly transparent. Anyway my apologies go out to this person before they see it, this was just the simplest way to test out the hairdo.
My over all opinion is eah.. so so. Hair and fur in general is a pain in the arse to render in any medium, and figuring out how to make it from scratch is to say the least a real challenge in CGI. I eventually did go and DL a tutorial on the subject and it turns out I'm using a technique almost exactly the same as author of the tutorial did... almost... It seems I've already picked up on a few "blender exclusive" tricks and am using them. (The tutorial was for Maya ;)
I am NOT happy with the back of the head (ping-pong ball ... whatever) It's easy to see how the various planes used to make up the 'hair' overlap and intersect making it look well, crappy, but that's all part of the learning curve folks!
Oh if you would like to see more of my animation work have a look over at my fap account or my furtopia one.

As a final note to linux & *nix users for making swf files.. Don't bother with swftools.. they no longer support avi2swf anyway.. download ffmpeg (it's part of the Mplayer toolkit) It works much better than avi2swf ever did and is supported as I write this!
