Mary-Rose's time working for the colony school was coming to an end.
After three weeks and plenty of hours spent running around trying to keep a class full of males fit, the Hippo's brief time as a fitness instructor was over.
Her time could be considered a success as the attention and attending rates of her classes were among the highest of the school's entire teaching staff. Not bad for a Hippo that had never taught before. Of course it helped that she played with and used the attraction of the students in order to keep them on track. Despite being a teacher for less than a month, those sorts of things mattered to the Hippo! She had an academic reputation to keep up after all.
A side benefit of her work was that he Hippo was looking and feeling her best in quite some time. The fitness plan she had stuck to began to have an affect on her, slimming her body down considerably. The Hippo could now run several laps of the school grounds without running out of breath. Of course it was very likely she would fall back into old habits once away from the strict, healthy environment of the school.
Her work with the students had not gone unnoticed. With the Hippo's final day rounding off with one last game of baseball to send her students away happy, their memories of their brief Hippo fitness instructor incredibly positive, Mary-Rose could retreat into her office, file the last of her paperwork away and head into the staff room for a cup of coffee. What she found there stunned her into silence.
The other teachers of the school had all gathered there to present Mary-Rose with a farewell gift. Atop the table in the centre of the room was a large purple and pink frosted cake with the words "Sorry to see you leave!" piped in on the top. That alone would have been more than enough, but there was more to come. The head of the school arrived with a large framed portrait under his arm. The man presented it to the Hippo, thanking her for giving up her time to keep the students of her class fit for a couple of weeks.
Mary-Rose wasn't one to get emotional in front of others very often. But she couldn't help herself here. She was infinitely touched by what the colonists had done for her. Wiping the wetness away from her eyes, she thanked them all, telling them they had made her feel so welcome, like one of their own in her brief time as part of the staff.
"All right, you people eat that cake because I'm not losing this slim figure on my last day!" She laughed, still wiping her eyes as the various teaching staff laughed and did exactly what they were told.
As the teachers gathered around to discuss with one another just how Mary-Rose had had an impact on their little school in the middle of no-where, the Hippo had taken the portrait under her arms and had moved to a quiet corner of the room. Armed with the portrait, she carefully removed the bow tied around the top of the golden frame before lifting it above her head. The Hippo stared at herself, Mary-Rose looking down at her, smiling warmly at her viewer.
There was a reason she held it above her head.
It was to keep the happy tears from splashing onto the canvas.
Dixie madness comes to a stunning conclusion with this gorgeous portrait of my Hippo character Mary-Rose. There are many things that I love about this piece.
The hair, the little ears, her lips and the soft smile. But what I most enjoy about this are the eyes. They're so big and golden. How could anyone say "no" to those eyes?
This is what led to Dixie's practice with Mary-Rose as the artist found that the Hippo appealed to many of their likes, such as curvy women, Hippos and feminine characters.
It is incredibly humbling to put a character out there that so many people have come to enjoy. I'm just happy I get to share them all with you.
Enjoy!

Hey I don't think she saw herself as a teacher, it's just something that happened to her! She rolled with the punches and her life was further enriched because of it. ^^
Oh now don't you dare say something silly like that. There's no way I'm a better writer than you are! If I was, I could make a living out of it! Hah!
You are more than welcome to write about her whenever you feel like, I'm sure she'd like that.
Thank you for the outrageously flattering comment. ^^

I can totally see a Mary-Rose fan club starting up somewhere around here, bro! That's no lie! I've told you many times how you stumbled onto something great when you came up with that Hippo, and this only validates that statement! Once again, love the story, and to read that Mary-Rose got so emotional over this portrait really says something about her character. So much awesome, bro!
Well bro that's the thing...
Did I discover Mary-Rose? Or did she discover me?!
N'aw I probably discovered her. Maybe.
Thank you for the kind comments bro! Oh yes, despite that hard outer shell, Mary-Rose has a gooey, squishy inside that can be touched by the smallest of gestures! One such being a portrait of her!
Thank you for the support bro, you mean the absolute world to me. ^^
