I tried out PaintTool SAI for this image by suggestion from my romantic partner, and I am amazed with how well this image turned out thanks to it. A small luminosity adjustment and all of my scanned lines become far more visible.
Minor digital touch ups to remove smudges that the scanner added in, but otherwise completely by hand as usual.
I tried a minor variation on the eyes, slightly modified the hair (though I have minor issues with the forward locks not appearing the way I intend), and remembered to darken the nose so it is visible on this image. XP
