Felipe *knew* he shouldn't have tried the new hot sauce.

Original title: "A flaming salamander wearing cowboy boots at a taco stand," courtesy Andy Hopp, at the 2006 Con on the Cob's Quick Draw.

15x20" gouache on board. Killed one of my nice brushes.

I love the detail you put into the background, and the overall palette choices you made--even the grayest parts of the wood still have a red tint to them.

Thanks! I tried the "pick one tube color and put it in every color you mix" theory, and I think it helped. I used Burnt Sienna. My friend looked at it, though, and said, "It's awfully... brorange."

This is really swingin'! The composition holds together very well and doesn't falter, you paid a lot of attention to the background but still managed to keep it from overshadowing the characters, and the textures are very lush, and again, consistent!

Favoritin' this!

Thanks for the feedback! I did about three zillion thumbnails until I got a composition that worked well in perspective.

Perhaps the consistency of the background colors & textures helped bring the subjects out... Hmm.

I guess it's mostly the clash of a simple comic base and the insane amount of work you put into the colors and ambiance. It really pays off! :D

Thanks! I put some burnt sienna in every color I mixed, which helped.

Thanks! Now that you mentioned surrealism, it occurs to me that this may be slightly influenced by that flaming giraffe in one of Dali's paintings...

And I really appreciate your comment. I would love to be an artist that could make both kids & grannies laugh.

Salamanders rock, no doubt.
Anthro salamanders eating spicey food, spontaneously combusting, and being glared at in awe by a burrow is just amazing.
