HUZZAH!
Because I know it'll come up if I don't mention it: I don't think living with your parent(s) makes you a 'huge loser'. It's just how the cliche goes, folks.

In my parent's house/my childhood home, we only had a dirt-floored crawl space that was low enough that you had to literally crawl to move around in (but hey, it was better than getting sucked up into a tornado). The entrance to it was through a trap door in the floor of my closet.
I don't wanna live there! D: Ironically, I do live in a garden apartment 150 miles away from my parents. So.....half loser?

I can imagine that being a tad unnerving, yes. ;^.^
A chum of mine from the old alt.tasteless newsgroup willed me a small vial of his ashes with the proviso that I use it for ballast on the tracks when building a train layout. Haven't quite worked up the nerve to do that just yet.

By contrast our hundred an' twelve yr old house
means got a stone hole in the ground with cracked
windows and large visible and ugly support beams
that look cobbled together from random large wood
scraps and other unidentifiable things and is so stuffed
with boxes that its hard to walk so kind of mitigates
the creepy factor and ill keep typing to make this even

Lucky! I wish I could find a house with a basement. I'd totally make it my Nyancave in a second. Or maybe make it into a playroom for my kids.
I don't understand the perpetuation of that cliche anymore though, most people have to live with their parents or their parents live with theme simply for the financial assistance it would bring. I guess it still kind of clings on from when you lived with your parents not out of necessity but laziness.

Well living with your parents (after the age of say...25) really defeats the purpose of what you're suppose to do. At a certain age, you're suppose to leave your parents house so as to be independent so you could either
- achieve the dream you once dream in terms of career
- Make your own income
- find a love one and maybe start a family.
Living with your parents, even within the ages of 30s and 40s defeats the purpose, especially if you rely on your parents all too often. Afterall, if you can't even take care of yourself, how would you be able to take care of your love one, your kids, or...well anything? (of course, if you're staying with parents because you're helping to take care of THEM, then it's understandable).
This is most likely why people see those that live with their parents as 'huge losers.'

I have a friend who's parents live with him. He's got no girlfriend or anything, he owns the house, etc... Turns out, it can be a culture thing, and they're just close. Sometimes it's monetary, othertimes its intentional. MInd you... most would love to have their own place.. Can't do dirty things when the 'rents are about.
