I think its a matter of sex appeal much of the time... Foxes, wolves, felines and the like are just prettier, cuter, and all around cooler than apes, plus, not everyone can do an ape like that. And, to reiterate Anion's point: Anthro gorillas are pretty damn close to humans already, most people become furries to get away from the general monotony of being a human, in my opinion.
