Can't say I've ever seen the Moomins, but this is gorgeous. If the series is a lovely as this is, I am interested in finding it. I love how you handled the snow, the figures.... lovely!
Related to young viewing, however, one of the after school ladies decided Jaws was a great rainy day movie when I was in preschool... My brother & I were both terrified of all sources of water for quite awhile, including sinks and toilets. Like a giant shark was gonna leap out of the spigot or something, heh. ah well :3
part of my fondness for it was probably nostalgia, it was a set of old swedish children's books that was made into an animated series by japanese-dutch collaboration. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moomin
very strange and whimsical, but the parts with the groke (who was this weird terrifying ghost that symbolized winter depression) were so scary that the first episode with her was banned. :c So I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only traumatized child, lol.
I had the opposite reaction to jaws, weirdly enough, and became totally fascinated by sharks! I can definitely see why an avoidance of water would come up though, hahah. 8D

if you watch from 15:30 onwards here, this is the first episode she appears: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyfpAnH4BpY
Wow, English moomin dad sound positively PIMPIN'. "Mnnyou'd better get your frying pan, mmmomma!"
But I might have to make a slight clarification here; Tove Jansson was Fenno-swedish, meaning she was born and lived in Finland, but her mother language was Swedish, and her books were written in same.
So you can really only blame us for about half of your childhood trauma.

YES! And it still fucking terrifies me. I had the books too, all the pictures were photos of creepy figurine dioramas. check out the groke here :S http://www.thechestnut.com/moomins.htm STILL scares me.
Moomins was my favorite scene..and damn..so scary..also the icequeen freaked me out always XD now she looks silly haha xD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tKR.....F-D3FX92wvMmnw
The books are kind of...dark...in a way. At least, compared to the sanitized fluff America "approves" of as kids stories. I've no doubt that's what drew me to the Moomin stories when I was a kid. I'll never forget Moomintroll finding Little My under a bush where she's looking at a miniature cemetary and, when he's shocked, she says something like, "Do you think these are the graves of my enemies?"
I am always happy when someone else mentions The Moomins! I only ever saw it when I was too sick to go to school.
The Groke was super creepy, and gave me nightmares (probably the expressionless face) , but I wanted more of her! (the same thing happened with the Xenomorphs from Alien). She was silent, creepy, haunting, and sad, but I wanted to know her story.
A couple years ago I looked into it and I think one of the books said she was cursed because she was greedy and "cold-hearted" and now she can never get warm, so all she has is greed. Or something like that.
The point is, I always thought the Groke was hauntingly interesting.
So now I gotta thank you for making a pic of her, and spreading the fear/nostalgia/story

you're so welcome! I always get kind of giddy when I talk to other people that have seen the Moomins, I live in america now where it never aired, but I have really strong memories of it. It was so creepy in so many ways, it really stuck with me. I remember reading that the groke was the personification of winter depression, which I thought was really interesting!
I live in Canada and the only channel here that showed it was a publicly-funded "children-friendly" and "educational entertainment" kinda channel that never had anything good on. But when I was 5 I had super-pneumonia, and one day my mom was looking for something on TV for me to watch when she and saw a cartoon, so thats how I first learned of it. Although I thought most of the episodes were dull, the ghost stuff was always good.
I wish I could find the movie in question, but its been hard. I think actually the episodes were screened on cinemas here in Norway back in the 90s, and the groke I remember is the same as from the episode "Tiny Guests" from the tv series.
also I forgot to tell you I love this , you really captured that same... eerie presence of the groke - she doesnt really need to do anything does she? just passive presence is enough.
Anyway, that white kind of dirty static texture you got the really imparts such a nice, frigid atmosphere.

i missed out on moomins, but this piece sure does remind me of stephen gammel's scary stories to tell in the dark illustrations that scared the hell out of me.
