American weather isn't as bad as most of my European friends think it is. In my experience so far out of any given 1000 days, only 1 of those days will involve aberrant weather. Out of any given 5 days of abberant weather, only 1 will be actually dangerous. I've suffered some 5 days of hazardous weather in my life. The most dangerous weather I've been through were one day of extreme heat circa 120 degrees with high humidity, two terrible blizzards, a tornado, and a hailstorm. The heat was only dangerous because I wasn't in an air-conditioned environment and was trying to move furniture, blech.
I'm pretty suer that Europe gets dangerous weather too. Some parts of it are at least as dangerous - Scandinavia, for instance, with hail, ice, blizzards, and extreme cold. Are there any good services which 'aggregate' European weather data? It might be interesting to compare.
Most of America isn't as dangerous as where I lived, even. I was in the relatively volatile Midwestern area, which has wet, windy springs, hot summers, windy autumns, and frigid winters. When you hear about flooding it usually is happening in the midwest region. Same for tornadoes and many blizzards. If what I've described sounds livable, then you've been hearing too many bad things said about America's weather.

I don’t know about any such service, though it would be quite interesting indeed.
Scandinavia, don’t forget, it’s much further to the north than the US, so... considering how south the northern part of the US is, your winters are much more severe than ours. For comparison, my city is about on the same latitude as Québec City, and note the difference on this image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:.....rature_Map.jpg
Now, I’ve seen and heard of floods here, and lately also wind storms and the likes, but that’s really about as far as it goes -- meanwhile the US is bombarded with hurricanes and has tornadoes.

That's part of what I was saying. America is BIG. Tornadoes only happen in one part of the country. Ditto for hurricanes - most of those happen to Florida. Hurricanes and tornadoes don't coexist in one location.
As for the severity of winters, they're not that severe. I see about 2 days of snow out of any given 365 day period. Besides, summers are worse than winters. In winter you can just wear more clothes to beat the chill. In summer sometimes you take it all off and it's -still- not cool enough.
