Baby seals from Arctic and Antarctic species have to be big and well-developed before they're born, and they get even bigger on their mother's milk in short order - most only get a week with their mother before she leaves for the open waters again. :< It's sad, but it's a very efficient way to get a healthy pup who can look after itself.
