Character models for an episode of Tiny Toons drawn, I think in 1989. I had also written and storyboarded the cartoon for director Kent Butterworth. It's hard to believe it, seen from today's style-guide crazed perspective, but when we did this episode, Warner Bros. did not have any model sheets for the Martian or Duck Dodgers. Luckily I had taped the original Duck Dodgers cartoon off the television and was able to use it for reference.
There was a lot of these weird purple pencils floating around the studio at the time...

One of the other writers came up with the idea of the planet-sucking machine, and the producer dictated that the Martian have a little neice (daughter?) and there was the usual meddling and censorship from Amblin.

I always thought the science/command guy was pretty weird looking with that lightbulb on his hat... it was rather underutilized within the few Duck Dodgers' shorts that he appeared in as well. Could've been used to show he has an idea, or as a substitute for a miners cap if the power within one of the stations went out. I wonder if they ever played with those sorts of ideas when the actual Duck Dodgers' show was airing. :3
No kidding?! That reminds me of a story Chuck Jones mentioned about when WB took over the studio. The new head of animation, Eddie Selzer, congratulated his team on how well "those Mickey Mouse cartoons" were doing and to keep up the good work.
The team said thanks and they would :)

That... makes me feel a lot better about my own cartooning actually. I don't use ANY model sheets for my comic, apart from maybe a generalized "style guide" with recurring patterns that I created well after the fact mostly to aid in off-the-cuff character creation.
Anyway, this is completely awesome, I love looking at model sheets, cus it's interesting to see how the characters "breaks down", and what makes them tick.
