Making the Salsuit- Part 1
(f5 for big)
So, I know a lot of people are going to groan, but I really want to make a suit to run around in at FWA. ;w;
I knew exactly what I wanted... and of course a lot of those are hard to attain. For instance, cat faces and small muzzles are hard to do... So I settled down, thought hard, and so far have a method that's working pretty well!
I really like balaclava style, if only because they're very soft and don't poke your face with anything. I hope to avoid using really anything scratchy or hard in this!
So, I'm spreading my knowledge. c: Tomorrow I'll be tackling the face and foaming it out!
Still thinking about what to do about the eyes... hmm....
(oh, and still searching for fur! Grey is a bitch to find.)

I might just have to go with grey then...

This looks promising to me but I'm going to order a swatch. :o Don't want to spend 60 bucks on something like that!
Oh!
question: how many yards do you need for a full suit? I'm 5'5'' and 120 or so, but will also be making a cats tail. really the only colors I need are grey and white. I just want to know what yardage to anticipate so I don't overbuy.

I don't THINK it takes 5, I've seen suggestions by makers that say about 3, but formfitting suits especially for smaller people definitely shouldn't take 5 yards. Let's hope someone who actually has made a suit can give a better approximation!
Oh, and this character should make a super cute suit :D

Feet and hands take a whole yard? I hope you're adding in sleeves/leggings to that because I can make quite a few large tails out of a single yard. I don't think the body/torso takes 3 for the smaller individual, I might go with 2 for someone this particular maker's size. I was forgetting the head, so that does add some to what I was thinking. It does have a lot to do with patterns and the way the fur is cut as well on how much a particular maker needs.
Though it's definitely not a bad thing to have extra fur left over for repairs or "upgrades" to design/talent!

Each foot takes up quite a good chunk of fur, so two feet and two hand paws can definitely take up a whole yard depending on how big they are/how you make them.
I would say 2 arms = about 1/2 a yard, 2 legs = a bit more than 1/2 a yard, plus torso. Definitely depends on the person's size!

How about this gray http://www.amazon.com/Wide-Faux-Lux.....aux+fur+fabric ?
The fur shown is not 2 toned, it's the same fur used on this suit! (Best shown on the picture with the flash) http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3627663/
It's still too light for what you're looking for. Most furs you will find will be this fur. DF, syfabrics, fabric.com, fabric empire, it's all the same fur.

Squeee! ^_^ Definately going to follow your progress on this. And I'd love to help out any in the labor realm, if need be. Ever since FangCon (ok, actually a little while before hand) I've been wanting to try and make up my oun. But, The 'big' full suits, and even clothed ones, just don't do it for me. Sounds like what you're wanting to do could be a step in the same direction as my ideas. We need to co-lab sometime! >_<
This is amazing !! I've wanted a fursuit partial for a LONG time and I just never thought I'd be able to afford the materials for this one, even so, I thought the foam would be WAY too hard to carve and shape perfectly, but even now I could just get one of these and glue the foam on the sides for added shape !! You saved my dreams with this !! PLEASE post a tutorial when you manage to get the fur on, I feel like that's going to be tricky for me D:
