Trying something a bit more experimental.
Musicals are quite silly. There's only so much you can do with your subject matter, and sometimes you can take the subject matter a bit more seriously than you probably should.
This one is no exception. Not only does it show how chess is seeerious business, but also tends to lean on SHOUTING = ACTING! And yet, it's sort of underlined by this self mockery or parody that I'm unsure is intentional or not.
Heck, pretty much the final song is pretty much dedicated to belittling the main character for taking the sport so seriously.
And despite all its cheese, I love it for it.

The original London staging supposedly placed the actors on a hydraulic moving chess board beneath an 8x8 grid of television monitors that showed various things, and the broadway version had a giant tower that spun around to show different settings. They probably would have had floating platforms if they knew how.
Interesting. This reminds me of this style: http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/egypturnash/
