Johnnie Walker Platinum Label is by far my new favorite whiskey. I've had the blue and I have had bottles that cost more then the blue and to be honest they were just not as good. All the happy otter wiggles to J.W. on putting together a blend that is smooth, full of complex flavors, doesn't completely break the bank, and is amazing right out of the bottle.
Ok my excitement about whiskey aside this was another awesome picture taken by

It is amazingly well balanced when it first hits your tongue. You get just the right blend of cereal, fruit and honey so that no one flavor really wins out over the rest. The finish has the same rich smokey taste you would expect out of an old whiskey but it does not rip your guts out like thermite the way others aged whiskeys do. Like I said in the description, I have had bottles that cost much more and were nowhere near as good.
Yeah, aging whisky is a tricky beast. Age it too little and it is unremarkable and the flavour palate is a tad bland. Age it too much and it's effectively "eau de chĂȘne" and the taste of the barrel's oak (or whatever wood) is very overpowering and off-putting. Blending it is a whole other beast altogether, and from what I hear JW Blue is a classic example of a blend that is overpriced for the experience that you're getting. I may have to check out JW Platinum if/when it comes to this side of the pond, or if I ever go back and visit Europe again.
I don't dislike JW Blue it just isn't the kind of thing you drink a lot of in one go both because of cost and because it's pretty harsh to have more then a little in your stomach. You hide it in a locked cabinet with your private collection and drink a little now and then when some big life event happens. The Platinum label is more the type of thing that you can put out on the top shelf of the bar and not feel bad if you pour yourself a couple shots in a tumbler and just drink it because it was a good day.
