Our website is a good place to start. http://tinyurl.com/d4nw7dy Check out the links page - the PDF book there, and Hedgehog Central Forum, are both great resources as well. It's never too early to start researching a new pet, especially one like a hedgehog. ;]
Check out the care page on my website for a good overview: http://tinyurl.com/d4nw7dy They're pretty easy as long as you know the basics of their care requirements, which are different compared to other small animals. Definitely something you want to research! Feel free to PM me, or email through the site for a faster response - I pretty much answer questions about hedgehogs for a living! I can help point you in the direction of a good breeder also; you absolutely don't want to get one from a pet store.
They poke if they're nervous or defensive - they raise their quills or curl into a ball. It's not very painful though - I have 24 of them (not counting babies) so I'm used to it. When they're well socialized and comfortable with their quills down flat, it feels kind of like uncooked rice, that's the best way I can describe it.
They're solitary animals, they all get their own cages. The exception is that you can occasionally house two girls together (if they're together starting as babies and it's what they're used to, and if they have the right personality for it), and breeding pairs go together for a few days, and mamas with babies until they're weaned. We also keep weaned babies in same-sex groups until they go to their new homes, or until 8-10 weeks (though babies are always picked up by 8 weeks, usually earlier). Girls can get along for playtime, which really means they just coexist in a playpen together. Males after 8 or so weeks need to be completely solitary, they'll fight each other.
We have a hedgehog room, so it's not the whole house. They're a HUGE part of our life, though - they're part of the family and also business. Hedgehogs are my job, and I couldn't be happier. :]
I picked a fennec years ago. XD That's all.

They're easy, just particular. They need daily handling, but it's not a high-intensity handling like ferrets need. Just cuddling or carrying them around while you do other things. Basically you need to research and know the basics of care, and as long as you have that information, they're pretty straight-forward. Not like hamsters or gerbils at all, though, and they're bigger.
