Several people requested that i upload the research paper i wrote for my Anthropology 301 course this past semester, so here it is.
Uploaded here because I've heavily used the Furry Subculture to explain Pierre Bourdieu's theory of Habitus and Field (which is some fucking INTERESTING SHIT, DAMNIT).
If you can handle the read, it's a cool topic.
i've already received my final grade for this, and i highly doubt anyone is going to be tempted to use it, but please remember plagiarism is academically punishable by expulsion. :3
also a HUGE thanks to
whitefoot for his help in editing this! sir, you are the king of professional sounding research papers!

So the first thing I did was skip to your references because a paper's sources are always my number one curiosity before I start reading. I totally love your choice of interviewee and the quotes you used from them. The sections on economic and cultural capital were great, they showed me a perspective on fursuits and notoriety that I hadn't considered before. Perhaps my biggest critique is that your section on Symbolic Capital was a bit sparing. I think a great example to have used there is how we recognize and celebrate members who have achieved great things or helped define the fandom (either locally or globally), and that one of the ways we do this is by naming them as guests of honor at conventions. We create an entire panel of such honored people, each one representing a faucet of the fandom that he/she best represents. They're not necessarily the kings of the economic/cultural capital of their specific realms, but their status and works in those areas have certainly made them great symbols there. Name JD Puppy and we know you're talking about dancing, or Blotch and the subject is now about art and writing. Or mention Whitefoot and now we're talking about kidnapping and shaved legs. xD
Your paper was really well done. It was straightforward and unbiased-- I didn't feel like you were trying to argue for or protect the fandom which is something I've seen a few other people try to do in their papers (in other words, they lost the point halfway through :P). Also I loved that I didn't need to have a dictionary handy to understand the words you used, that's kinda important to me, lol.
Good stuff!

cool! i've never met someone who was all that interested in sources (at least, so much so that they skip to see them, before reading the article. makes a lot of sense, though!)
i totally agree with you on the Symbolic Capital. i was grasping at straws for examples (i know they're out there, but i was having a hard time thinking of any immediately. i DID ASK PEOPLE BUT NO ONE RESPONDED ;A; )
thanks! :3
i tried my best to use Furry as an example, rather than explaining -what- it is, etc, since that wasn't the point of my paper.
aaaand yeah... this class has been a HUGE challenge for me, with the vocabulary and terms overall. instead of using a text-book, all we've done is read academic journals on they key topics, and man... some of those are a PAIN to slog through. i don't care how intelligent convoluted language makes a writer sound, to a normal reader, they just sound like a pompous ass. i like approachable stuff. :3
thank youuuuu!
(paper actually ended up getting an A+ - all Whitefoot's fault, for his champion editing skills- so i'm REALLY happy with it!)
