Kanahti and her mate (I keep forgetting his name!) are latae dancers who leave their pack at a young age to live in the wilderness of the southern kendavi plains. They aren't very social :] This scene takes place well before the adventures of Kanahti and Follet.

The latae dance is one of many kendavi ceremonial/ritual dances.. it celebrates the role of 'protector' and 'protected'.. kendavi pack life depends upon members supporting each other, so the dance represents that relationship. It's not inherently or intentionally a sensual or 'romantic' dance, but Kanahti and her mate, as well as a few other individuals, have used it as such. The latae is performed only by a pair, although on several occassions, multiple pairs have performed the dance together. The pair is not always emotionally attached to one another--there are renowned dancers who have no relationship (many kendavi are 'single') with another, but it isn't uncommon for emotions to crop up between two dancers, considering the nature of their dance and the time they spend together.
