Picture this, it's a small country at the tip of Malaysia. So small that most of the things that happen on it rarely attract the attention of the international community.

Military-wise, the state enforces conscription, so you can imagine that most of the military personnel aren't professionals, just kids being made to carry rifles. What they don't seem to realize, is that conscripted kids rarely make good soldiers, and they keep insisting that "it's too expensive to have a professional volunteer military".

So I made plans to emigrate to the states, starting with college. Not the smartest or strongest guy in the world, but I certainly have higher aspirations than being a mere cannon fodder conscript. I should not be forced to spend my life doing menial labor when I have every right to become an astronaut, engineer, or even a powerful business magnate, just because the Singaporean government, who obviously does not care whether I live or die, wants me to sacrifice everything I have to protect their unsavory behavior and interests.

I believe you've made the better decision. Considering your descriptons, I heard recently on the radio that the Phillipenes are now the new base for many "Off Shore" service lines, and Telemarketer schemes. It might be these services are moving to the middle Pacific now.
