For those of you that have not realized it yet, the whole 'selling adoptables' thing is a scam.

Well the difference in that case is because of how publishing works. If a manga book of 200 pages or so is printed several thousands times for the many potential sales they may make to many many customers, then they can plan to sell each book for $6 each. In the case of these commissioned comic pages, they are only made for ONE person to buy, therefore justifying the higher price for each page with the amount of work put into them.
yea that is true... but still $15 a comic O_O... then again your saying someone spent $80 for an adoptable XD which I do believe since I seen loads of adoptables and ... stupidly enough have a friend who bought one but it was with DA points that she got from commissions... this is sounding worse and worse as I go on isnt it XD
Adoptables always struck me as a weird and stupid idea, because it really makes no sense with some of these prices, $15 a pop? The hell is this, now granted, I could see them not being a terrible idea if it was a character with a full ref, but most are just the same template with different designs added to them, why not commission the artist anyways? Its just a weird practice that seems pointless.
According to my understanding of it the "appeal" (I use the term for lack of a better one) to adopting a character design is moving the intellectual copyright of the often recolored clone from the creator to yourself. Roughly and depending on where it's posted, according to copyright law the creation is the intellectual property of the creator when posted to the internet. For instance, my character Draco belongs to me, but I always use "fair use" licenses where other creators can utilize the design if given permission.
To sell a character for profit to me cheapens the bond between creator and created. I view this practice as a way to appeal to a crowd that has little to no creative prowess and if they do buy into it they deserve what they get. Am I a fantastic artist? Heck no, all I can seem to do is sketch trees. Would I buy an adoptable? Probably not, unless it came with a plush or something then maybe. $80? That's a bit steep, $35 for the intellectual rights of the throw-away character and a plush of it? Yeah more reasonable, might even go up to $60 seeing as it'd be a custom made plush, those are hard to do.
Tangent aside, I see the appeal, and the target audience, it's not something I'd do or agree with. Unless there's a tangible product involved that is.

I havebought an adoptable. the big appeal was that they took a base and did colors and some shape adjustments for me to make a character the way I wanted. so it basicly was a commision of a race that the artist had made. all in all, I was verry happy with the results. and glad I didnt just take one of the premade ones.
I always figured I could just design my own...

This is so lulzy! I KNOW RIGHT!?
For a while I created characters classed as "Seedlings" which were pretty much adoptables before they came popular and oversaturated. Seedlings were unique and one-of-a-kind... and no re-colors or cloning. You could choose to rent a seedling which would get you a date with him/her for a picture or two for a reduced commission price, or buy the unique character which came with a signed and watermarked info sheet that was privately delivered by email only for the buyer to upload, then I would take that character down from my gallery. It worked well for a while but the modern adoptables that came out 3 months later shat upon my business. >:[
