Canis latrans
This is my coyote pelt that I worked with about a month ago, that I recently received from my tanner. I found the female as roadkill off of the highway exit ramp; she had been killed earlier in the morning by the looks.
I skinned what I could salvage of the pelt. I originally had the toes in, but cut off the feet at the last moment. The face could have been included but several parts were a bit mangled.
The shoulder fur is actually quite long and I like how there's silver with black tipping.
I prepped it and went to my taxidermist for the tanning, since I didn't have the drum/chemicals past salting/prepping. Sadly, her right ear was nipped a bit in the process, but she turned out beautifully. I hope to get some very good use of the color patterns for art reference.

I certainly agree. Most of the pelts I work with are roadkill. I'll probably be bringing her to next year's RMFC if you want to touch. I was surprised at how long her nape fur was.
The great tell with roadkill to know if it's rotting is the color of the root. As with humans, you pull a hair and it has a dark root. However, if you pull an animal's it's white. If you pull some fur and it's dark, than the body is already spoiled and you won't salvage the pelt- getting a lot of fur slippage.

Yep! Except for my rabbits and one fox, I've done my own skinning. Unfortunately, her skull was smashed and not salvageable. It takes a lot of patience and stomach to skin them, not necessarily from it being messy, but the smell. It's an overwhelming 'meat' smell, and not the good kind.
