The elephant was named Topsy. She was a circus elephant who was regularly abused by her handlers. She was executed for killing two of her handlers and a circus attendant. Thomas Edison used her execution as propaganda against Alternating Current, claiming it was unsafe. Topsy was not the victim of Edison's electrocutions. He electrocuted anything that would hold still long enough... Mostly house pets...

Funny. Edison was an asshole who went on an animal killing spree, tried to make powering a home a pain in the ass, and set back radar until the second world war, but people keep praising him. I'm not kidding about the part about radar. Nikola Tesla, inventor of AC, invented radar and offered it for use in the military. However, Edison was in charge of military research and refused the offer, saying that there was no practical use for radar.
