I remember back in ninjitsu training... you'd have a monofilament line wrapped like the sageo around the sword, plant the sword in its scabbard against a wall and step on the handguard to help give you a step up over taller walls. The line was usually attached to your wrist so you can always pick up the sword after vaulting the wall. Silly things make for interesting story elements =3
