CLASSICAL MONTH 1/4 Im Wundershonen Monat Mai - Schumann
This is part one of the four part series called Classical Month.
I'll post every Satuday unless I forget <_< BUT I WON'T
First up is "Im Wundershonen Monat Mai" The first song in the Cycle Dichterliebe by Robert Schumann.
It's nice and short, as all of these songs will be (attention spans)
Things to listen for in this song.
1. I totally mic'd that piano myself! I'm not playing it though. That's my accompanist. A very lovely man who is not involved with the fandom in any way.
2. Classical technique. What do you think of my man voice hmmm?
3. German. If you speak German I would love to know what you think of my pronunciation
Here are the lyrics with a translation:
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Knospen sprangen,
Da ist in meinem Herzen
Die Liebe aufgegangen.
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Vögel sangen,
Da hab' ich ihr gestanden
Mein Sehnen und Verlangen.
In the wonderful month of May,
When all the buds were bursting open,
My love burst forth from my heart.
In the wonderful month of May,
When all the birds were singing,
I confessed to her my yearning and my longing.
Music: Schumann
Voice: Me
Piano: Andrew M. (different Andrew from my guitarist. I just know a lot of Andrews)

Oh I love you for this!
Really beautiful, your singing German is very good, you pronounced a bit softer than it usually is, but I think it's really good anyways! A bit more clear diction would help you focus your voice better.
Also, I think you have such a talent and such musicality, I've probably told you that already, but still - I would maybe make a little more focused, more tender yet shaped tone in the endings of the phrases, especially on the vowel 'e', since it is normally a very wide positioned vowel, it is quite hard to not let your voice get 'hit' and loses it's good position and shape. Lied is very special style and in my opinion is the trickiest style to sing, but you did a wonderful job on this one! It's beautiful! You are very very talented! Can't wait to hear more!
Also congrats to Andrew the accompanist! Really beautiful playing!

Softer, you mean I could make the consonants more aggressive? I like to smooth things out cause it helps with the prettiness, but believe me, I chew those consonants on more intense songs heheh.
Thank you so much ^^ I'm very happy that you like this. I'm sure many don't (Classical turns many off)
I seem to do better at Lied than opera and other clasical styles of singing. I'll have a few more things, one in French and two in English, so if you listen to all of them, you'll get a good idea of my level. I know things could be better, but phew it takes so much time and effort to get really good at the old style. I'll keep doing my best and trying to improve.
I know! I love Andrew. He did great on this, and we work well together.

So do I. It's what I'm best at singing it seems heheh. Well, that and contemporary English.
I did a couple from that cycle a year or two ago, but never recorded them. It's another good one, but I have a really hard time memorizing strophic songs and that one is full of 'em. Get the different verses mixed up (Even though yes I know this one is ALSO strophic).

Certainly is and now actually this answered a question I had but never asked ("Do you speak German?") Apparently not...hey Richie Valens so famous for the song La Bamba didn't speak Spanish
"I have a really hard time memorizing strophic songs"
So that's why Breathe In at the concert turned into a word salad!
I think
Classical is fantastic as it allows
you to more often use your ability
for vocal acrobatics
the [Latin is it?]
in the beginning of your cover of "Want You Gone"

Aw man I have a thing that is already recorded, but is second in line for posting that I think you'll like. It's a new acapella thing and I sing really high, fly all over the place, and throw in the most interesting harmonies I could think of. Another week or so and that'll be up... in the meantime though, YES I totally screw up words to my own songs live X3 I had hoped nobody would notice, and they usually don't :P
Want you gone starts out with Italian.
You can tell Latin cause half of the words end with "us"
Deus pasus es dolmus psalus er.... fructus (That was in no way a sentence and I think I made some of those words up X3)
The LAST song in Classical month is a very modern one, and is a study in tricky intervals, and I love it.
I hope it doesn't turn people off with how odd it is heheh.

It's like acting, to me at least.
In my diction classes I did my best to say the words naturally, like a conversation, as if I was acting in a foreign film heheh.
Problem was that I would go too fast and make the rest of the class mad. Looked like I was trying to show off X3

Powerful, yet so lyrical! Astounding!
I said it and I'll say it again: Your voice is very well trained.
The pronunciation is gut.
Yet I heard 2 minor flaws:
1. The first e in Herzen should be more like an ä (mind the dots^^) like in "gerne" or "Stern", especially in classical singing.
2. The word "alle" sounds more like olle in the 2nd verse (or like the english "all"). You had sung it better in the 1st verse, so at least this was no double fault. :3

I SHOULD have recorded this live in a nice hall... if I had the time and facilities.
It's mic'd super close which kind of kills some of the resonance, but thank you. I'm happy with this recording.
I'm so glad to hear this from 2 different Germans ^^ I've worked hard for 3 years to try and make it sound natural.
I smeared Herzen to try and make it smoother, but treatment of first sylable e's are troublesome to me.
My teacher, who is an American who spent a lot of time in Germany, singing opera and having a career and such, wants me to say them very open, making something like sehnen into zen-in (trying to type phonetically. The first syllable becomes like in the word Bed.
However when I listen to recording of Germans singing German, they tend to make it very closed, like bee or tree, which I kind of like. *shrugs* It's a conversation on subtlety that can be frustrating X3
Thank you very much for your attentive listening. I wonder if any Frenchmen will be about for the next one.... hmmm

You're very welcome. in all matters.
The pronunciantion of the e depends more depends on the consonant that follows. if there is for example an f, r or n afterwards or if its you should most certainly pronounce it like the e bed. The same when it stands at the end of the word or before a double consonant (c-k counts also). An exception is if the e is the last letter of a presylable like in bezaubernd or begatten.(^^ look that word up)
On the other hand if it's followed by a g or b for example you'd rather pronounce it like where you start the vowel in train or cane. The same when it's an eh (dropped h) or ee like in Sehnen or Schnee.

ok finally got to listen to it.
the man voice is incredible, and sadly i don't know German.
a thing I really liked is that reading the translation the song sounds as though it'll quite happy but it might be me and how i hear the tone of your man voice but it sounds a bit sad
either way i really like it^^

Aw ^^ Thanks for listening.
I have grown fond of this style, and am starting to like how I sound singing it.
It's WAY harder than the rock stuff.
Recording the piano was effin' awesome. The room itself is dead, but the instrument reverberates.
It was mic'd only inches from the strings with two small diaphragm condensers, so they pick up every creak of the mechanics, every shake and vibration of the instrument.
I love it

I think you sound perfect singing it (but I'm a bad judge at that)
The tone of the piano is beautiful (and like I said, sounds like droplets or something idk) and whatever you did works perfectly. Some people think of noise like the drummer moving or the hammer in the piano as excess unneeded, but it makes it more real.
