You know what? I also really, really hate it when people won't let me call anime a cartoon. They're afraid of the negative connotations the word carries because of the Western Animation Age Ghetto, meaning 'cartoons are for kids'. Well, if they continue to not call anime cartoons, it only makes the problem worse, because everyone can plainly see that, yes they are cartoons.

On that note, I really wonder why some geeks insist on the Japanese spelling of names for their cartoons and video games and completely decry any attempts to westernize anything . . . even when these names were intended to be Western in the first place. (Take, for instance, anyone from Trigun (was intended to be an English-speaking world), FLCL (Some people insist it's 'Furi Kuri' even though the creator said he made the title to 'sound western' even though it's gibberish) and a great deal of character names that were very clearly intended to be Western words or names (Seriously, why name someone Arukardo when it's SUPPOSED to be Alucard in the first place?))

Want another example? Death Note. Main character's name? Light. Name part of the fandom calls him? Raito. And I swear I have heard of people who still insist on calling Vegeta (DBZ) "Bejita". No. Just *no*.

to be fair, many Japanese people call American comics "amekomi" to distinguish it from their own local style. I don't know if they actually use "manga" to broadly refer to all comics, but they do definitely make a distinction with American comics.
