I just finished reading Chanur's Legacy without reading any of the other books in the series. I wasn't super keen on the writing style, but I did really like the hani as a race and the crew of the Legacy.

I love C.J. Cherryh's Chanur books.
I should point out, though, that earlier books in the series make it clear female hani don't have what humans would recognize as an overtly feminine shape.
(Pyanfar Chanur is confused and a bit startled when she realizes the "oddly-shaped ones" of Tully's people must be the women.)
