Shortcut. Yeah, some shortcut. The secondary highway was a series of wheel-clenching terror-filled moments through the jagged mountains. Jesse just grinned at you from the passenger seat, his big frame filling your cheap plastic subcompact.

You didn't even notice that you were the only vehicle making the Sunday morning trek to the coast on this desolate path. If you had, maybe you would have worried a bit more when you pulled over to relieve yourself by the side of the road.

Being alone with the burly brother of your co-worker didn't concern you at first, but while melting some snow in the roadside ditch, he began to grunt and snort, kicking a snowbank in a backwards motion. Odd didn't even begin to describe his behaviour.

Jesse pulled off his shirt with one quick motion, catching briefly on a pair of new bumps at the top of his head. As his pants ripped open, you realised that he wasn't stripping so much as growing out of his clothes, his boots exploding into leathery bits.

Stunned, you watched as Jesse's body stretched and darkened with a thick layer of fur, so much like the deer you so frequently see near your home in the interior. A strong rack of antlers momentarily block out the sun as he saunters up in front of you.

You had heard rumours of such creatures all your life. Beasts of legend and mystery.

Reality tells different stories, as you were about to discover.
