This little bitch came up to me at Wendy's. And started hating on me.

Why don't people understand this is a "typical reaction" for a reason. It's not different than someone walking into Wendy's dressed in scuba gear or wearing a hug head dress. You wouldn't wear a fireman's suit to Chile's why would you wear a fursuit anywhere other than somewhere that's appropriate? When you intentionally stick out and look out of place you invite this type or reaction, its natural for those that leave the "herd" to get picked of. Rudeness is rudeness and unnecessary but it's naive to expect anything different
I gotta agree fully with this. There is a time and a place for everything. If you blatenly go against the social norm you make people uncomfortable. Without knowing you, many will assume you are some sort of a wacko, or dangerous (or both!). In dressing up in a fursuit in a public space "just because" without an actual event going on or further reason behind it, you invite this type of behavior.
The thing that bugs me is this.. people used to know that there was a time and a place for everything but as time has worn on and our society has evolved and with the introduction of honey boo boo.. we as a whole .. have gotten progressively worse.
We don't CARE about what other people think or whatever else. Now if this was at a convention and this was close to the hotel.. that I could see. But just putting on your fursuit and going to somewhere to just randomly do it.. no..that's not just stupid.. it's dangerous. You have NO idea how people are going to react and what if this kid had like five or six of his buddies and jumped you as you left? Granted I don't think about that when I was at FC last year and went to Frolic but maybe I should.
I think right now fursuiters can be split into two groups one of them are people that love to get dressed up and entertain the crowds but the second group love to throw on a costume and act stupid as if to say "hey! lookit me!"
I wish I could say that I am surprised.. but I am not. Why? Look at youtube. Look at what most of the young kids are doing on that channel.. they're jumping off roofs, acting like morons , getting hurt and they're filming it. And this behavior is EXACTLY like the ones on YT.
There is a time and a place for everything but if you think you're going to walk into a Wendy's with a fursuit and not get "hated" on.. you're sorely mistaken.

Saying this again, it REALLY depends on where you live. I live in one of the bigger towns of Montana (but it's still a small town compared to most states), and our local fur group suit in public often. People are more or less delighted or curious when we meet them and rarely, if ever, do we get any flack. We go through all the proper channels and have permission to go everywhere we go (most of the local business owners know us since one of us is a well known pro suit builder and she has a lot of connections and friendly relations with other business people in town), but yes, we ARE just wearing our suits to suit and have fun. Is that really a crime?
We don't expect that everyone will understand or respect us, but we let that roll off our backs. We don't do it for a shock factor, we do it because we like to perform and use the costumes we paid a lot of money to get (or spent a lot of time building) In a small state like Montana you CAN suit in public SAFELY. The worst any of us have ever gotten was a nasty comment we didn't even pay attention to. I'm not saying go out and publicly suit if it can't be done safely, or if you're in downtown LA strollin' by skid row, or if you're uncomfortable with it. I'm just really not impressed by the fact that people think you HAVE to be at a con or event to suit and that people who do are nuts, if you can safely suit for your own enjoyment outside an event.

Ok. Hold up right there. You said "we go thru the proper channels and have permission everywhere we go." How much do you wanna bet that this kid didn't? That he just showed up in suit and didn't get any clearance or permission to do that before hand? Heck I remember living back in the bay area where they had a group of fursuiters going to a mall and the FIRST thing that they did is that they went to the mall association and asked if this was ok. After a very long meeting with them it was deemed to be fine and they were allowed to fursuit in the mall. If you were to just show up in fursuit (maybe around halloween) I can see it being tolerated. But now? In this part of the season? Just showing up in suit would probably get you kicked out of a mall because they don't know you're intentions.
I don't suit outside of cons because of a few reasons 1) I live in Sacramento and we don't have a group to do so.. closest is Critters by the Bay and sure i'd love to go down and do that.. but I haven't done that yet. 2) I value my suit I have NO idea what these clowns are going to do or how I am going to react.
At a con I feel safe and there's a bit of camaraderie among the fursuiters and at last years FC we had a volleyball tournament and the girls from all over were eating us up! They loved us! I hope they're going to be at next years FC 'cause we had fun! :)

Yeah, we go through the proper channels if we're going somewhere like the mall (where we have our meets twice a month), but we suit on Main Street (that's all there is to our downtown) and at parks and such with no permission. All we do is walk around (and play around at the parks, lol). I agree it's always best to ask permission. I don't doubt you value your suit, the three of us who have suits in the local group value them very highly (they were all made by top name makers: Twinky Arts, One Fur All, and of course Mushi makes her own suits). I'm also not calling anyone out on not suiting outside a con because they don't feel safe or aren't comfortable.
Maybe I'm not understanding the argument fully. I've always taken the argument to be that a lot of people are against suiting outside of cons or events ENTIRELY (regardless of if consent if given for the suiters to be there or not). Is it that people are just against people who just go out in suit with no permission? The latter I can understand more, the former I just honestly don't agree with, especially if you have permission to be somewhere. But if it is the latter then I do understand that a lot more, and if that's the case, I apologize if I came off as abrasive!
Awww! My friend and I missed the volleyball players :( Two years ago there was a cheerleading tournament going on and they wandered over to the con. There are some fun videos of it on youtube, lol!
