Before I start my next big Gunpla build, I decided to do some artwork for the time being. So happens this idea of mine which I conceived 2 years ago finally pop back to my mind. le tour de balto (this is only a temporary title) I always wanted to do balto fan art but never had the time and the idea for it until now, and what better would it to fuse my favorite sport together with it. This was actually my third attempt, as the previous 2 attempts was so horrible done that I totally scarp it. Not until 2 weeks ago I decided to give it a shot again and finally got it right, then I decided to go on to get it complete, well in terms of drawings and anatomy I am still trying to get it right, the toonboom line work still need a lot of fine tuning. coloring wise will put on hold until i am fully happy with the line work.
I really had a lot of fun when I am drawing balto's bike, it was an old vintage bike name "look KG 96" dated back during the 80's and it was my first dream road bike when I first started cycling. If I am not mistaken it was a steel frame version, Look KG 96 are the very first carbon bike frames in the 80s, not full carbon, but they are join together with aluminum lugs. only the tubes are carbon, it was manufacture by a company call TVT. the steel frame suits balto underdog story very well, riding an old bike (probably from his father) racing with today hi-tech bikes ridden by steele, but it still comes down to leg muscles and courage.
That's all for now, stay tune for the color version next.

I guess you have to take the good with the bad on modern bike technology. The dropper-post changed my life, I think I'll put one on every mountain bike I ever own from now-on. On the other hand stuff like the Sram XX1 group; it's like the cruel bike gods made it just tease poor people.
I can nerd over your bike drawings all day, first thing I noticed about your mountain bike drawings is the Onza bar-ends. Balto's bike is the same deal. Drop-in bars, rear derailleur has the Dura-Ace Sti shifter, but the front Derailleur is hooked up to a down-tube friction shifter.
Steel is such a lucky bastard. I'll bet he's set up with a full Sram Red group with Zipp tubulars. I'm sure he's blood doping too XP

ok my turn to bitch about bikes
Onza barend was my favorite, i really regarded not getting the Onza CWA barend when it was on sales, i especially dying to own the TI version, or the yellow one, i did made a joke to someone if that person can get me an Onza ti barend i don't mind doing an bike art for him for free. LOL i personally am using scott pro cut, very much like onza only slightly shorter but still feels good, i did manage to get an silveer onza CWA short version, it not comfortable because it's too short. even also dying to get GT jersey or shorts (can't find any nowadays)
i can already imagine about balto future bike "Look 695 with Mondrian paint scheme (i would want to own one myself) http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r1mLsNfPi.....EPS+-+Bora.jpg
haahah damn right, steele is using sram red groupset with trek madone frame. mybe i tribute trek for supporting doping LOL

Awesome picture! Cant wait to see it finished.
Funny thing is that my bike used to have those very bars that are on Balto's bike. I took them off because I was afraid of mashing my knee into them while standing like Balto is doing in the picture. That and I'm rarely in drops that far for any length of time. I actually replaced the Shimano 600/501 components that came with the bike to Dura Ace 7400 Components so I'm currently using that STI shifter, though slightly modified since I could not locate any shifter hoods for them.
I am curious as to why you drew a STI rear shifter and a downtube shifter for the front. My guess is that the early STIs tended to be iffy shifters for the front derailleur. Mine throws the chain off maybe about 1% of the time.

That was a good point about smashing your leg on the drop bar, mybe that is why scott no longer manufacture them, sometime i also question will that drop bar works, as far as i know that bar was dated back in the 80s during greg lemond era, so does look bicycles. I chose that kind of bike set up for balto because balto may have gotten that bike from his late father who was also racer at his time, and since balto story was all about underdogs, it makes sense that he mY not have all the luck of having a good bike nor even a team, all he has was his fathers old bike and he literly have to aquire any form of bike component to keep his bike running, if i have the chance to reaaly show the whole bike, u would have said that was 1 messed up bike with components that dont match well together, so does the sti shifter, he may have both sti shifter but one may be damage during a crash and now he replace it with a 105 brake lever and downtube shifter because that may be the most affortable option for him. I do know that many racer including the late lance armstrong has this similliar set up to save weight on the bicyle when going uphill, since left sti shifter are mostly not use for mountain stage, and saving weight for hill climbing means every gram counts.
I keep forgetting about weight considerations.
Those Scott handlebars came with my 1994 Cannondale when I bought it. It was built from the frame up for a young racer so I don't know if he used older bars for them or not when it was built.
I guess I know how Balto feels. I can't afford brand new equipment either. I have to scrounge around for parts to keep my bike going. I lucked into most of my components by being able to fix broken/grimy parts. But there is a certain satisfaction to mashing up a hill on an old dated antique past someone on a $3000 bike.
