Surprise! Yes, aside from my writing, and when I tried my hand at drawing but didn't do too well, I can also do music. Sort of. That is, I can write tunes and lyrics, I can come up with harmonies, but when it comes to working out accompaniment, it tends to suffer a bit. And let's not even consider my ability (or lack thereof) to play instruments or to use complex music programs.
Enter my friends Kenneth and Rahshu, both of whom have the ability and knowledge to use such programs and both of whom, but especially Kenneth, are musicians themselves. When I visited them way back in March, I took with me the sheet music for various songs I had composed on Finale--most of them simply me messing around and transcribing some of my favorite movie, video game, and pop songs, but a few are my own invention. And Kenneth agreed to use GarageBand to sequence the music, pick instruments, put it all together, and then turn them into MP3s--with some embellishments and changes of his own, seeing as he knows accompaniment far better than I do. Rahshu, intrigued by my song and Kenneth's take on it, also added his own touches and flourishes, and here is the result.
The song, for those who are not familiar with it, is taken from the book The Last Unicorn on which the animated film was based. The song was originally sung by a bored virgin princess who needed to summon a unicorn to prove her virginity before she could wed; later the song is sung by the unicorn herself in human form, having forgotten where and how she heard it but finding meaning and poignancy in its lyrics. This, combined with the overall feel and genre of the book (modern anachronisms notwithstanding) inspired me to write a tune that was melancholy, meditative, and ethereal, as well as using a very medieval sort of tune and harmony. Hence it being written in C minor, one of the saddest and most mournful keys to compose in.
Lyrics by Peter S. Beagle. Tune, harmony, and basic accompaniment by me. Further accompaniment by
kennethbeltan . Instrumentation, sequencing, and overall programming done by both him and
rahshu .
I am a king's daughter, and if I cared to care,
The moon that has no mistress would flutter in my hair.
No one dares to cherish what I choose to crave.
Never have I hungered, that I did not have.
I am a king's daughter and I grow old within
The prison of my person, the shackles of my skin,
And I would run away and beg from door to door
Just to see your shadow once, and nevermore.
EDIT: For some reason this version will not work for anyone, neither to play or be downloaded--I guess FA had some kind of brainfart during the upload process that corrupted the coding so no matter how I tried to replace the file it still wouldn't work. Anyway, I re-uploaded it, and that version works fine.)

Hey there! To answer you there, we used a couple of programs to create this version of the song. We simultaneously worked in Musescore and GarageBand to input Nieve's song into the computer. GarageBand's real strength is writing contemporary music. Sadly, it's a lot more limited when you want to write classical music, right out of the box. So while there's a few stock instruments, we had to do some digging to do the song some justice. Granted, there's still a flavor of the computer in the music, but I'm really happy we were able to bring Nieve's song to life as well as we did. Perhaps someday, we'll be able to do a remaster, but for now, this fits well within the scope of the project.
