Pencil + Flat Color commission for

So lets see, poses. I think a lot of artists really suffer from boring poses. To a degree I think this is fine because if you're trying to get good at other drawing basics (anatomy, style, perspective, etc) it makes sense to stick to more simplistic compositions. However, I think I have enough practice with that stuff now that I'm ready to start making images that are a bit more... dynamic. Which is what I was trying to go for with this guy. :D
So this is Taern, Zeifer's Lynx character! He's wearing some sweet armor and flinging around an assault rifle, which is of course not very safe but then again, it's also way cool. :P I had a great time with this and I'm quite happy with how it turned out! I'd love more excuses to draw sci-fi debauchery... also I'm pretty sure I didn't use that word quite right. LOL!

The color scheme on this is great. I'm a huge fan of grays and blues like this- it looks awesome.
There is a ton of texture in this piece as well. It almost looks like there are leftover sketch lines or something, it's hard to describe..but it adds a ton to the piece.
The flat shading makes the pose a little tricky, though. I mean, I'm sure that's what the commissioner paid for so that's the style- it just makes the back leg look a little awkward. You kind of have the leg twisting around, and while I understand the pose entirely, the lack of shading makes it come off as a bit two dimensional.
The rifle also doesn't feel sharp enough. It has an almost organic feel- I dunno if that was intentional or not, but it doesn't have sharp, jagged lines and outlines like I feel it should. Obviously that isn't the focus on this piece. The lynx looks fantastic though. I love the eyes, I love the coloring, I love the texture.

Aww, thanks Fuzz! I really appreciate all this! Very good points and I see exactly what you're talking about, I will definitely make sure to watch for two-dimentionalness and making machinery more... hrm... jagged in the future. ;D I'm glad the color scheme gets your seal of approval by the way! I was a bit worried about it before I posted it, thinking that maybe there were too many grays and that the background color didn't match them too well. Phewfta, worry averted. :)
The 2D thing isn't because of poor technique, it's just because of lack of shading, I think. Since that's the whole style of the piece, it's not really a technical problem. I would be rather curious to see what shading would do though, as I'm not entirely sure how you could go about fixing that with a flat scheme. Ah well. <3
