When needed for a different task, my cyborg Cobalt will just swap entire bodies by moving their core neural structure from one to the other. The entire remaining biological component of their being exists in this brain case, though even that is being slowly traded away by artificial neural architecture. Their spine is less of a support structure in their bodies and mostly just a signal transmitter, protected by alloy and polymer.
They're still quite alive and aware here, though incapable of doing much but beeping and flashing at you. They secretly enjoy the feeling of freedom from his mechanical housing, for a short time.

Independent brain-cases do offer a good deal of freedom of form. Being able to swap out bodies as easily as we swap out memory cards (or flash drives) is kinda handy, no doubt about it.
Bit vulnerable in that state, but hey; nothings perfect.
Now, downloaded consciousness, there's true freedom... (Not that I'm knocking the brain-case, mind.)
