I use Photoshop, and all you have to do is lock the layer/pixels and swipe over it with color!

I also use layer lock for coloring! Like- i color it one solid block of poo and once its locked it wont leave that area which is super nice!

An easier way to do this to the whole line art is to right click the layer, select "Blending Options", and use "Color Overlay".

Your method, however, allows for small colour variations in different parts of the line art, which when done right is a damn cool effect!

My art teacher gets a "I want to stab your eye out" look is she ever see's you shading in black.

I don't THINK I'm colorblind, but I know my monitor is way past its 'replace by' date. Games keep coming out that are too big for it :x

I wish I could see the colors better! :p they're too close and subtle for me to see the difference *is red green colorblind* but favorited because shading with colors is totally the way to go!

More of, I wouldn't want to bring you something that clashes with what you learned. I normally don't design a character to be white unless I'm trying to express a sense of purity in the cleanest of snow white on them. Shading with color on a white character makes sense, since they would reflect more of the colors around them, but to tint them like that would ruin the entire effect of a color scheme I have (in some cases) spent years of careful consideration upon.

Grey shading can look good for rare stylistic purposes, but it's not something you'll see many high-quality artists doing.
I mean, I use it on white sometimes myself, but you can use ANY color on white and it will still look good, and still look white.
Why go for the dull option?

Both are in color- they both look fine!

That's implied grey-scale, which i prefer much more than literal grey scale!

I like the grey one more because of the artitic consideration- the first one looks kinda just like a TV snapshot. haha

I see your explanation above and I'd like to add to my post. A lot of times a light blue makes white things look a lot more pure than grey. Grey is muddy.

I didn't disagree with the colored shading, it's the tinting that it bothersome.

oh, the tinting of the actual white? Yeah, that makes sense. I draw my own character pure white too.

I mean- tinting is kinda a form of shading- unless the character is in a solid white space- if going to take on some color from the outside but still appear white.

Its your call of what you choose for what ever reasons i'm just saying :P - being solid white in a colorful world just doesn't happen with reflection of colors!

Somewhat true, I have seen white as just white, and such a thing is understandable of there is color to the room lighting. But all that said, you are closed for commissions, and out of dozens of named characters and hundreds of unnamed backgrounders, I have a total of three white characters, so you there is no loss. >v> I don't generally design with white color schemes, there are certain personality traits one would have to have to STAY white, and those just aren't common.

I usually shade with opacue/alpha and use a colour for it. Then I just use rubber to delete areas where I want the light to be.

I switch in and out of filling in shadows and cutting out light. It depends on which one would have a larger dominance in the image- if it is mostly shadows, I cut out light- if it is mostly light I fill in shadows.

Truth. It hurts sometimes. Especially your eyes.
I happen to draw myself as a white cat. Needless to say, people do bad things to me, shading wise. It's never as important as on white fur. I've looked so dead at times T.T
