As a child I played with dim, red, diffused lens HP and Monsanto LEDs. I recall thinking it would be swell if an LED could actually be used for more than an indicator light.
When yellow ones got inexpensive enough I could illuminate small buildings made of LEGOs.
I still find it awesome that LEDs are high enough output in the last few years to illuminate streets.
There are other reasons to like this changeover from both high and low pressure sodium street lights.
As many who follow me here can figure, I like nighttime photography.
LED street lamps have far less stray light AND the colour temperature is WAY whiter.
The above one is a Leotek Green Cobra GC1.
So night shots have less light bloom to deal with and the photographs need much less colour temperature correction.
It's almost a side benefit that it uses far less electricity. :)

Downside as they've learned LEDs don't have the heat output of regular bulbs. for street lights not a major deal. But for traffic lights in snowy areas that lack of heat has been an issue.
If it weren't for cost I'd upgrade the CFLs at home to LEDs but there isn't much energy savings going from CFLs to LEDs unlike the change from incandescent to CLF
