Chapter 1: The Egg
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Takashi paced up the sidewalk of a quite hillside road, accompanied by his closest friend and neighbor, Kyo. The 11 year-old was busy lecturing about his many home projects, on the way to his house.
“…get it Takashi? If I were to get a hold of some legit nuclear energy; my work with laser technology would finally be complete.” Kyo said.
Takashi replied, “I ain’t even gonna’ pretend like I know what you just said. Summer vacation starts tomorrow, but all you care about are your little science experiments.”
“You’re just jealous, because I’m four years younger than you and still smarter.” Takashi turned to look down and face Kyo, and he in turn glared at Takashi.
“O.k. but who’s taller, stronger, better looking, and WAY better at talking to girls.” Takashi implied, counting his fingers.
“I think you’re confused with those last two. All the chicks at school say that I’m way cuter,” Kyo boasted with a smug face and shiny eyes. Takashi countered with, “Teachers do not count bud, plus you’re eleven, that cute thing will NOT last!”
After the boys’ competitive argument, they soon approached the driveway to Kyo’s house. The two said their goodbyes and parted ways as Takashi continued down the concrete path. He eventually made it to a cobblestone walkway, punctuated by a mailbox, painted to look like red snakeskin. Takashi walked up to the front door and used his key to unlock it. Once inside he threw himself into the living room couch. He took off his sneakers and rubbed his feet into the plush tan carpet, glad to finally be home after a long day of school.
His house was two-stories high with a kitchen, garage, dining room, and living room on the bottom floor. In second level there were three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a balcony. Takashi enjoyed his house, but everything seemed empty since his older brother moved out a year ago. It’s weird, because Takashi had never seen or heard any from his brother since he left. Trying not to get lost in memory lane, Takashi reached for the T.V. remote but stopped. He saw a yellow sticky note over the power button. It bared his parents’ signature. They must have known the remote would be first thing their son would see, when he came home from school. He read the note to himself and…. “WHAT!!!! They left town for their second honeymoon!” He continued down the note. “And won’t be back until the week after next…” There was a long dead silence in the air. Takashi jumped to his feet and yelled to the ceiling, “YESSS! I GOT A WHOLE WEEK TO MYSELF!!” Takashi ran upstairs and down a small hallway into his room.
“Wait until I tell everyone--” Takashi grabbed his phone from the dresser, but it was off. He tried turning it back on, but nothing changed. “Oh well, guess I’ll just try the computer then.” Takashi sat down at a desk beside his bed, where his laptop was. He clicked the power button and……..nothing but black screen. “What?!” Something was obviously amiss. Takashi grabbed the remote to the T.V. on his wall, and attempted to turn it on. Just like before, he failed to start any electronic device. “Alright, this is gettin’ spooky. I’m hittin’ the breaker bo—”
Maybe it was just his mind playing tricks on him, or perhaps he’s getting over excited about summer. But Takashi could’ve sworn he felt his room trembling around him. Objects like pens and a lamp rattled on his desk, the floor quaked wildly under his feet, and all the previous items he had tried to activate were all flashing on and off, alternating from blank to static. Above all this madness, there was one thing Takashi couldn’t possibly ignore. (Not like he shrug off all the other stuff.) A sharp buzzing sound radiated from the wall surrounding .his door. The chaotic noise was piercing yet melodic to some extent. Takashi stumbled over to the wall and patted it down, in order to locate the cause of the chime. Could it simply be bugs in the wall or perhaps some god-like admonish?
Takashi, despite the irritating ringing, pressed his ear against the wall…*WWWHHHHHRRRRR*…wind? It flowed and rushed like a windstorm in an empty wasteland, devoid of life. ZAP! “GGAAAAHHHHHHH!!!” A sudden surge blasted Takashi strait into the opposite wall of the rectangular room. Suddenly the wind raged through every inch of the teenager’s bedroom! The blaring shriek became even more intense than before. Our young hero had his focus on another matter. The gaping vortex plastered onto his wall. Clockwise, it flowed and ripples cascaded through like ferocious water. It bared hues of the blue sky and light, bright as the sun. “What the heck is that?!” The elliptical shape in the wall spontaneously spat out a silver sphere-like object onto the floor. Takashi stared at the object with mixed feeling of fright, awe, and curiosity.
Now the intensity in the room began to gradually diminish, and the shining vortex shrank in size until completely vanishing into space. The world was silent and Takashi’s room was at a standstill. His face pale and vague of any emotion, Takashi was sitting on the floor his back slouched against the wall. He couldn’t believe the sight of his room: his closet door open with an assortment of clothes piled out, papers from his notebook flooded the floor, and his T.V. collapsed to the floor with its screen fractured beyond repair. After observing the damage, the boy’s gaze fell upon the silver ball. Takashi reluctantly crawled towards the sphere to examine. It seemed about the size of an average basketball, the shine on its surface was dull and murky. Takashi tapped it with his knuckle and out came a hollow chime. ‘It sounds like…’ he thought. Then he picked up the sphere; it expressed a little weight and felt leathery, warm, and a bit clammy. ‘…and it feels like…’ Takashi carefully walked out of his room with the ball wrapped securely in his arms. He made his way down stairs, took a pillow from the living room couch, set it on the floor, and placed the ball in the pillow.
Takashi had always been a big fan of reptiles, he’s the one who painted the mailbox like snakeskin, and he loved to draw sketches of snakes, lizard, and even dragons. He never had a pet before, so Takashi always fantasized about having a pet dragon. Knowing this was beyond impossible, Takashi could only live his dreams through his art. Except now fate might have smiled on this young man… ‘No way, it can’t really… can it?’ Just then, as if answering, the ball wobbled. Takashi jumped and his face lit up with utter excitement. “YESSS! It’s a real egg!” He was overjoyed at the sight of that orb quivering. The egg still continued to wobble; it rolled off the pillow and behind Takashi. He never noticed, but the egg was growing in mass and its shell was already cracking. “I just have to keep it alive and well. Feeding it is gonna be a nightmare, especially when it gets big. I wonder how my parents are gonna take this when tell ‘em…if I tell ‘em.” A puny claw pressed against the fractured shell and broke through covered in slimy yellow yoke. “How long can I keep it a secret?” Next followed the head; revealing a slim silver baby dragon. It showed a white underbelly and purple markings under its eyes and tiger stripes along its spine, to the tip of the tail. The head was shaped like a bird’s and its neck was somewhat short. Its eyes were slit, and their color and glassy sheen compared to that of the Mediterranean Sea. The wings were smaller than the head and almost unnoticeable. Its silvery scales looked incredibly smooth, like steel armor. It crawled out of its shell on all fours. It hind legs bend like those of a dog, and the fore legs were framed like human arms. Its tail was one foot which was the same length as its own body. Once the hatchling was completely free of its hard casing, it wiggled the yoke off its body like a dog shakes it wet coat.
Takashi continued ranting to himself, “Oh man! What if it gets so big, I couldn’t even hide in it the house anymore?!” Takashi had a quick thought then faced palmed himself. “Duh, dragons live WAY longer than people do. So by the time that happens it’ll be someone else’s prob—.” A sudden noise broke his train of thought. A low and somewhat diminutive gurgling, it was. NO, not a gurgle but… “Uh oh…” *gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr* Takashi peeked over his own shoulder and immediately found the source. The little drake’s eyes were angrily narrowed at Takashi, and its tiny fangs were bared viciously. The miniscule dragon slowly stepped back to the wall then placed its hind paws against it with its back arched. Next, the growling grew even more malicious.*gggggrraaarrrrrr* Takashi cautiously drew back.
“Nooo,” his eyes locked with the hatchling’s own. “No, No, No,” Finally the little lizard let loose the puniest roar and catapulted itself at Takashi with powerful force. “WHOA!” Takashi just barely moved out the way to feel the mini dragon ‘ZIP’ past by only few inches. Just the sheer wind that followed felt like it could pound him into dust. The little one however wasn’t so lucky. It kept flying until ‘BAM’ it had collided head first into the opposite wall and fell, leaving a nasty crack. ‘Ouch,’ Takashi thought, ‘I know that smarts. Maybe it won’t get up?’ Of course he was totally wrong. It bounced back to its paws and whipped around to face Takashi. “Piss!” The dragon pounced at Takashi again. Only this time the human boy swiftly grabbed the pillow from the floor and swung at the miniscule dragon, full force. He made contact, so the creature slammed into the couch cushion. Takashi didn’t have a moment for relief. The beast sprung back up and instantly started shredding the sofa. Its razor-sharp claws and fangs easily slashed through the fabric, as if it were wet paper! The sofa slaughter gave Takashi the opportunity to run and hide. He bolted for the kitchen, and quickly hid behind the counter. Carefully, he peaked over the counter to see a shower of white fluff and tears of red velvet. Not only that, but the dragon was going for different pieces of furniture now! Takashi was completely terrified. “Uh oh, I gotta do something now, before he gets to the T.V.”
Takashi crawled frantically on the floor, trying not to attract the beast’s attention. He scanned the counter and the cabinets for anything to defend himself. He eventually came across his dad’s P220 pistol, in the locked drawer of the kitchen. It was brief, but there was a look of anguish in Takashi’s eyes. Did he really have the heart to do it? Take the life of the first, and very likely, the only living dragon he’ll see in his lifetime. To top it all off, it’s just a BABY, a NEWBORN! He took the pistol in his hand and stood to tip-toe out the kitchen. If anyone else saw the living room now, they’d say a twister ripped through here. White stuffing was pilled everywhere. It mixed with the shreds of carpet, torn drapes, and broken glass. Takashi was hot mad just looking at all this. Though one thing did catch his eye, gave him that warm fuzzy feeling inside. In the middle of the floor, wrapped in the ruined drapes was the dragon hatchling. It rolled and fought with the drapes, almost like a playful puppy. Takashi was trapped in thought, ‘I…...b-but I…..’ His hand quivered and soaked in sweat, Takashi choked the handle to the pistol, and almost involuntarily his arms rose. They rose to direct the gun’s cold stare at the seemingly innocent creature. The infant somehow just freed its head from the tangled cloth. Its head rose to gaze at Takashi, not at the weapon he possessed but into his eyes. Takashi stared back into the deep blue-green spheres, and he was getting the ‘deer caught in headlights’ look. Single beads of sweat crept down Takashi’s face, his heart pounding through his chest. His entire body became heavy as a mountain, but at the time hollow like a balloon. Unable to breathe and practically choking, he at last decided to lower the gun.
But, a voice, a faint ghostly whisper echoed in the teenagers head, “…chaaaaannggge…….fffaaaaaatte………………….prrroooooteeect……….” (change, fate, protect)
“HUH!!” The sudden whisper, it surprised Takashi too much! *BAM*A tremendous bang filled the house and as if it were all a horrible nightmare…left the whole world in dead silence. Takashi looked on with widened eyes, unable fathom what just transpired. There he stood frozen and still like the Antarctic itself. What he did, why did it happen, how could this be, why him? Over a million questions must have rained through Takashi’s head that day, but only one word could flee his lips, “……….No.” At that time, the house remained indefinitely silent. It was silent like the dead.
It’s been a full 24 hours since the incident, and Takashi was in his room lying on his messy bed. He hadn’t bothered to clean his bedroom or the living room since it happened. Normally he would’ve called a friend from school or even his parents. Whenever his phone rang, he just left it to ring. He just lied there staring out the window at the crisp clear sky and blinding sun. He might have looked peaceful for a second, but it was impossible for him to stop thinking one moment, yesterday. The infant dragon, the gun, and especially that ghostly voice, these thoughts wouldn’t stop revolving around his mind. Above all other consideration, Takashi just couldn’t help but wonder, ‘If it really had been up to me, to decide whether he lived or died, would I’ve made the right choice?’ It seemed like at every minute he continued to ask himself that same question. “Oh well, it’s done with now.”
All of a sudden Takashi heard a light and repetitive bump at his bedroom door. He lifted himself off the bed and walked to the door over the scattered sheets of paper blanketing his floor. The knob turned almost instantly the door flew open and there was a flash of grey. Takashi fell on his back, but he could not rise from off the floor. He was being pinned. An amused grin appeared on his face followed by a slight chuckle. “Alright, ya got me. Now get off!” Takashi was freed as he lifted his back to stroke the head of his captor. Gleaming back at him were those deep Mediterranean slit eyes. That right! The little dragon was alive and as energetic as ever.
Takashi, of course, decided to keep him after all that happened. To his surprised though, the dragon developed a lot for only a single day. He was at least two feet tall standing on two feet, and a tuft of scarlet red hair sat on top of his head. Lastly, there were these little nubs on his head. One was on the roof of his muzzle; the others were placed on both sides on the upper side of his skull. Over all the madness that occurred yesterday, Takashi remembered one miraculous moment. When that strange voice scared him, Takashi accidently pulled the gun’s trigger. In that very instant the bullet was stopped. Right there, it was clamped in the teeth of the dragon. Now all that was left to do was to name him. Takashi actually thought of many names for the dragons in his pictures, but there was one name he never used. After yesterday, he figured this particular name was nothing but perfect. “Well since you demolished all out of fish, let’s go scavenge the fridge for any more meat for ya, Chaos.” Takashi ran down to the kitchen with little Chaos close behind. Takashi was glad things worked out for now, but those words still haunted his mind. “…chaaaaannggge…….fffaaaaaatte………………….prrroooooteeect……….”
