First Faces of the FBA - Darnell Loewen
Meet Darnell Loewen, first franchise player of the Newark Pride.
Born and raised in west Philadelphia, he spent most of his days on the playground. In his youth, he rejected the idea of taking over the family restaurant (a steak and hoagie dive) and pursued a career in sports.
During a time when blowout styles were popular among lions, his short, permed mane and mutton chops gave him a distinct look that made him stand out among his fellow cats (though it probably made him stand out, regardless). That, in combination with a confident nature, amazing court sense, and the way he'd seemingly glide past his opponents (As one spectator put it, "Darnell don't run, he flies.") made him a fan favorite and netted him countless endorsements, most notably his face on a box of Meaties® breakfast bites - "Bring Out The Predator in You!"™
In the end, he ended up taking over the family business upon retirement. He regrets nothing.
Hey, Mr. Loewen! Anything you'd like to say to all the people out there?
"Real cheesesteaks come from Philly. Anything else? Maaaan, that ain't nothin' but a steak sandwich."
I am inclined to agree. East coast represent.

Funny thing is, I didn't even know Semi-Pro existed until I went to look up references of 1970s basketball players. I was somewhat disappointed to see that Will Farrell was basically the humanized version of the character I imagined (right down to the perm and headband!), but I figured, oh well, may as well incorporate it as part of a joke.
He got in one little fight, and his mom got scared, and said:
"Did I raise you wrong, boy? 'Cause I thought I raised a LION. Now get back out there and give they asses a good maulin'!"
...And thus, many wacky hijinks did not ensue.
Really cool pic though; The whole 70s look is done really well. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this on FA.
Kudos.

Dat 'Fro.... Dem Chops....... O_o.... Ewwww... dem shorts. Yeah Basketball did everyone a favor making the shorts looser and lower... just something about mid-thigh short shorts that's just AWFUL.
That aside, THIS IS EPIC!! Heh, the first franchise player of the Newark Pride, back before it was more Pride in sport rather than pride as a pack.
