New Caledonian crows fashion sticks into harpoons and use them to snag tasty grubs out of holes and rotting wood. I wanted to draw a dinosaur using tools the same way, and I figured if any dinosaur was clever enough to figure it out, it would be a troodontid. So here is Jinfengopteryx elegans, a small troodontid from China that lived around 122 million years ago. This was my first serious foray into paleo art and though I admit I took some liberties with the flora, I tried to be as accurate as I could with the dinosaur. Qilong helped me out a lot with the anatomy (many thanks!)

I can't believe I haven't seen until now. Absolutely fantastic piece.
I some other troodontids have been reconstructed with feathers stretching down the backs of their legs (Scott Hartman, 2005) but this doesn't seem to be the norm and I haven't seen/heard any evidence of that on Jinfengopteryx elegans. The foliage and insect are great! Coleopterans had highly diversified by the start of the Cretaceous, so that's perfect! Angiosperms are known from the Early Cretaceous fairly well now, so you could have gotten away with one or two little simple flowers if you wanted.... but this piece is absolutely beautiful and you should be really proud of it.
